A horrible dream
Hello everyone!
hope all of you will be fine.
<Oscar Wilde has famously said, “They have promised that dreams can come true but forgot to mention that nightmares are dreams too.”>

Every night we turn of the lights, close our eyes and meander into a new reality. A dream is a series of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Why we dream is not fully understood, though dreams have been a topic of scientific, philosophical and religious interest throughout history.
We all dream, even if we cannot always remember doing it. But some dreams stay with us forever and haunt us whenever we think about it. The dream that I am writing about is one of the horrible and dreadful dreams or I would rather say nightmares that I have ever had. I usually have an amalgamation of plenty of thoughts when I go to bed and this particular dream reflects my deepest and darkest thoughts and fears.
It happened in the winter vacations of 2017 and I had a sleep-over with my siblings and cousins and we watched a lot of horror films at night. My mother always advise us to not eat anything right before you go to bed as it will give you a bad stomach ache and bad dreams too. I forgot and slept after having a mid-night snack. That night I had a spooky dream that gives a chill down my spine whenever I recall it. I saw that we are moving into a new town and I was not happy about it. Thus, at first I resisted because moving to new places have always been unpleasant for me but then everyone convinced me for it. Now I found myself in the new house but there was no electricity owing to some issues in the wiring. All of my siblings were there except the middle one which was quite strange as nobody was mentioning him at all. I started looking for him but failed miserably. Sad and depressed, I started wandering in the corridor that has stairs towards the basement. It intrigued me and I pushed open the door with full force and also hurt myself in the process. The basement smelt like burn meat and cabbage and I was disgusted by it. Ignoring it, I started calling out for my brother. Suddenly, I was hit by an unknown force and landed on a covered table. I could hear my brother asking for help but I could not get up. As I was struggling to get up, a man with a big machete ran toward me and shoved it in my shoulder. I started running for my life while the man was chasing me screaming and chanting something. I can clearly visualize that scene as it was a last night’s dream. The scene shifted and I found myself running towards the hall. As soon as I saw my parents and other siblings, I started crying. “What happened to you, we were about to have dinner”, my father asked me with a smile. I told him about what happened but he could not hear me and continued doing the chores. It was a lucid dream which means that I was aware that I was dreaming but the terror was extremely realistic. I have never had such a long dream in my life.
It was a dream within a dream. I woke up outside a playground and the dream continued with me running towards home but it was dark outside and a storm was coming my way and none of this could make any sense to me. I was constantly in a state of pain and grief. As soon as I was able to move forward, I saw a woman hovering in the air. Her face was burnt and she was carrying my brother. I was petrified with what I saw and asking for help. I felt helpless and terrified, hoping for it to end. I was crying, “Let him go” in a loop. The woman was wearing a long black dress with her nails twisting and turning due to their length. “What do you need him for?” she asked and vanished him in the air.
My younger brother woke me up because I was shaking and screaming while sleeping. Even after waking up, I was still in that stupor and could hardly open my eyes. I was tired and restless and my heart beat was fast. Everyone was so much concerned but I could not talk for a while. I changed my side and starting thinking about what I saw. I read prayer and had some sips of water. I knew it was just a dream but it was a terrible one and shook me heavily. As soon as I was in my senses, I told my cousin about the dream and she advised me not to share it with anyone. She convinced me and said, “It was due to the horror films that we were watching throughout the week.” I usually sleep alone but I could not do so that night as I was getting flashbacks of the dream. I felt as if it was real because I could recall every detail about it which is not very common. Since everyone was concerned about me, they stopped the horror movie and put on an animated movie. I slept again beside my youngest sibling.
People who overthink tend to have weird concerns and a chain of thoughts that do not let them rest mentally. I started meditating after this dream to control my thoughts. Dreaming is undoubtedly quite strange as the brain cooks up a story and present to you as a film. I have my fair share of pleasant dreams but they are nowhere close to this horrible dream that I had as it is often said that sadness takes over happiness. I decided to quit watching horror movies because it was messing up my mind.
