More profit in flower cultivation than crop

in R2cornell4 years ago

Farmers of Sadullapur in Gaibandha are becoming interested in floriculture as the profit from floriculture is higher than other crops including vegetables. The flower farm, which was started in 2014 on only 22 acres of land, has now spread to about 30 bighas of land in the upazila.

Mokhlesur Rahman Biplob, a farmer of Tajnagar village in Idilpur union of the upazila. In March 2014, on the advice of the Upazila Agriculture Department, he collected 25,000 rose saplings from Jessore at a cost of Tk 90,000. He planted those saplings on a farm built on his 22nd century land. He said that it cost him 10 thousand rupees.

After five months, he started selling roses for Rs 2,000 a day from August, he said, adding, "Then we don't have to look back."

Biplob is now cultivating roses in three bighas of land. He is selling flowers worth Rs 1.5 lakh every month. Excluding all expenses, he says he is earning Rs 75,000 a month.

Mokhlesur Rahman Biplob said that at first it took a lot of speed to sell flowers. A few flower shops in Gaibandha town were his only buyers.

Now passengers are sending flowers on the roofs of buses to Rangpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari, Bogra and other northern district towns.

He said that after picking flowers from the garden, he tied the bunch, wrote the address and phone number in it and got on the bus from Palashbari and left for the place. Money comes on mobile phones, there is no problem with selling flowers.

Inspired by Biplob's floriculture, Anisur Rahman of his village, Mostafizur Mia and Sabuj Mia of neighboring Chaknadi village, Ashraful Islam of Raghabendrapur village, Aminur Rahman of Mahipur village and Shahin Mia of Devattar village in Gobindrara started floriculture. Roses, tuberose, marigold and gladiolus flowers are now being cultivated in about 25 bighas of land in that union.

Ashraful Islam of Raghabendrapur village said that flower cultivation is more profitable than paddy, jute, vegetable and rabi crops. Less work and less investment. Once rose seedlings are planted, flowers are available for ten consecutive years.

Shahin Mia of Devattar village in Gobindrara, a flower grower, said that there is not much trouble in cultivating flowers like other crops. So others like Ashraful Islam of Raghabendrapur village have become interested in floriculture in the hope of making a lot of profit with little capital and little effort. And for this they want the help of agriculture department.

Mostafizur Mia of Chaknadi village cultivates roses, nightshade, gladiolus and marigold on three bighas of land. He said he has cultivated tuberose in one bigha of land at a cost of only Tk 20,000. Since then, he has sold flowers worth one lakh rupees in the last one year. He hopes to get this amount of money in two more years.

He also sold gladiolus on 15 acres of land at a cost of Tk 2,000 and sold it for Tk 30,000 in just three months.

Nayan Mia, a florist in Gaibandha town, said flowers had to be brought from Jessore at a higher cost. Again many flowers would have been lost but now the flowers we get stay fresh for many days, our loss is less.

Tanjimul Hasan, deputy assistant agriculture officer of Sadullapur upazila, said care and occasional application of a little fertilizer is required in floriculture. But every day cash comes into the hands of the farmer. As a result, the farmers of this upazila are becoming interested in flower cultivation day by day, he said.
