You can see what is in front of you. So it would be easier to detect the threat and defend yourself when you see your opponent's move. If the attacker attacks you from behind, that can be different to deal with if you cannot detect that earlier.

Maybe you are distracted and you have no idea what's going on behind your back. Suddenly someone grabs your hands and pulls both hands behind. You sort of get stuck, and if you try to do something standing at the same spot, it would be very difficult to do that.

You can try to pull your hands forward, but it is not going to be easy. You will not get the strength to do that. In that situation, you can step back, no matter how hard the attacker grabs your hands.

As soon as you step back, your hands would be to your side. Now you can release your hands and strike the attacker. The key point is, if the attacker locks you and you get stuck, make your move to be a better position so that you can easily release yourself.
