Securing Steem's Visual Future: The Image Hosting Proposal #115
Hello Steem Community,
The power of a decentralized platform lies in its resilience and choice. This is why the Steem blockchain thrives with multiple independent nodes and APIs so no single point of failure can silence our community.
But what about our visual content?
For too long, we have relied on a single, centralized image host. A platform without alternatives is a risk. If it fails, our blogs and posts are left with broken images, silently eroding the value of our work. A decentralized world deserves decentralized visuals. Without them, Steem’s vibrant community would fade.
images.steempro.com will be launched to solve this. It is the first independent, community-aligned alternative, ensuring your images have a permanent, reliable home. The goal is not to be the only host, but to be a foundational one a pillar of our ecosystem's infrastructure.
Let’s be clear: starting an image service is easy. The real challenge is keeping it running long-term. The ongoing costs of high-performance servers, global content delivery, secure storage, and active maintenance are what separate a temporary solution from a permanent utility.
To make this project standalone and remove the burden from any single individual, we are placing it in the hands of the community. By supporting this proposal, you are not just funding a service, you are investing in the resilience, independence, and visual richness of the Steem ecosystem itself.
We’re asking for your support to cover the essential infrastructure costs for the first 6 months. The total estimated budget is around $200 per month, which comes to about 12 SBD per day (round-off figure) based on current prices.
Cost Breakdown (Monthly Estimate):
- VPS Server (The Core Application): ~$30
- Secure Image Storage: ~$90
- Content Delivery and Optimisation: ~$40
- Backup (Data Safety): ~$20
- Development & Maintenance Buffer: ~$20
A Note on Estimates:
Please note that these figures are estimates. Costs for services like CloudFront can vary slightly based on the number of requests and traffic we receive from the community. The amounts above are based on projected usage with a small buffer for safety.
This proposal is a straightforward investment in the core infrastructure of our shared Steem ecosystem. By funding this, you are ensuring that every blogger, artist, and community on Steem has a dependable home for their images.
Thank you for your consideration and support ❤️.

There's one thing I don't understand: how will the project be financed after the six months?

The reason is we can not find the exact cost for the services other than storage. Like ingoing, outgoing requests backup plan and cdn.
We can get the mass adoption in first 6 months which can give us a idea of cost for the next 6 month or long. That's why decided to go with short period first. I hope for the next we can have long proposal by discussing the 6 months scenario here.

Ah, okay, thanks - voted :-)
Something I've noticed about the images for a while now is that when you insert an image via the clipboard, it is saved as a .png file. I think it would make sense to use a compressed format such as .jpg instead, which would save a lot of storage space. Just an idea, I know the front ends would have to be updated for that and would be another story.

Yes it can be done on frontend.
Such a big idea on a small budget is really commendable. Go ahead, I'm with you. Thank you very much.
