Flutter Development Journey: Health Issues and a Pivot in Service DirectionsteemCreated with Sketch.

in Steem Dev2 years ago (edited)

Last year, I found myself deeply drawn to the development language Flutter and embarked on learning Flutter development while also starting the development of a mobile app based on Steem. During my learning process, I mainly referred to Udemy and YouTube.

However, this passionate learning and development journey adversely affected my health. Reducing sleep to immerse myself in learning and app development after returning home from work eventually led to health issues, forcing me to pause my endeavors. This experience taught me the importance of health management, and I am currently focusing on recovering my health through appropriate exercise and sufficient sleep.

Despite these challenges, I couldn't bring myself to completely give up on the app I was developing. Therefore, I'd like to share the screenshots of the app's interfaces I developed so far.

According to Apple App Store's guidelines, the release of cryptocurrency-related apps by individual developers is restricted. This led me to initially consider only releasing the app on the Android market. However, there are already excellent apps like 'Steempro' in the Android market, and I deemed developing a similar app to be inefficient. I also considered the demand for a mobile app targeting only Steemit users to be very limited. Importantly, I am an iPhone user myself.

For these reasons, I decided to pivot the direction of the service. I plan to focus on developing a web service that utilizes AI to help users write better posts, considering health management and the limited coding time after work. Given my experience with Flutter, I was relatively satisfied with the Android platform, but encountered some issues with writing features on iOS and web. The absence of a suitable open-source Flutter editor was also keenly felt. Based on these experiences, I am planning to shift my focus towards web development.

The following is a record of my 4-month Flutter mobile app development work:

Your app already looks pretty good. It's a pity to give it up. You must have already spent some time with it. It looks like some important functions have already been implemented. Do you use the app for yourself?

Thank you so much, Moecki, for your encouraging words! You're right; quite a bit of time and effort has gone into developing the app, and it does feel a bit like saying goodbye to a part of me.

And to answer your question: It's still unfinished and has many bugs, so I am not using it yet. Also, installing the app on an iPhone is very cumbersome without joining the Apple Developer Program.

Thanks for your support and interest. It means a lot to have someone recognize the effort put into this project.

Yes, I can absolutely appreciate the effort involved.

However, this passionate learning and development journey adversely affected my health. This experience taught me the importance of health management, and I am currently focusing on recovering my health through appropriate exercise and sufficient sleep.

I hear you! Coding can be obsessive, especially when learning something new. There's always another feature or a problem that needs solving. It's fun... until you realise it's 2am and you've got to be awake again in 4 hours time!

I suppose you also reach a point where you're setting expectations of yourself. Which just increases stress levels unnecessarily. Scrap the goals... the goal is to enjoy learning 😉

One thing that you could do is create an app that uses the underlying blockchain for data storage and "reward earning" - like the DrugWars or Appics or similar. Rather than trying to reproduce Steemit. Something like a prediction game... or something similar to Splinterlands on HIVE. My brain's too tired to think of any good ideas but have fun... always remember that it should be fun 🙂

I deeply resonate with what you've said. The process of learning new things in development is truly captivating, but sometimes it becomes the reason we neglect our health. While our passion may keep us up late into the night, it's crucial to remember the importance of managing stress and finding joy along the way. I fully agree that setting goals is good, but enjoying the journey itself is even more important.

The idea of using a blockchain-based data storage and reward system for an app is excellent. Approaching with a new concept rather than simply replicating existing platforms can be a great way to exercise creativity as a developer. Considering games like Splinterlands on HIVE, as suggested by you, seems like a good idea. Though thinking up ideas can sometimes be exhausting, finding fun in the development process is most important.

I hope your development journey remains enjoyable and healthy, and I wish you great success in your new projects!
