What is the longest holiday in your country

Most countries have their own unique holidays, even though some are the same for a whole region. I live in Honduras, and like, I guess most or maybe all countries in Latin America one of our longest holidays is Easter or Semana Santa as it is called in Spanish (at least here). This is actually a religious holiday but for most people it is just the opportunity to take a week off. Yes, Easter here means a good part of the population is off for a whole week, excepting of course many who work in the private sector. For all others Easter means the chance to go out to the beach and have some fun. This is the time for hotels, restaurants and tourist spots. People from the two largest cities flock to the best spots to try to have some fun and rest. The good thing is as it is in the summer season we nearly always have great weather.

But here in Honduras we also have another week long holiday, this one is usually in the first week of October. Again we have an exodus of big city folks to the recreational parts of the country. There is one caveat though, October is not an easy month, the chances of rain are over fifty per cent, so sometimes this holiday, called Feriado Morazanico is completely ruined, at least for those who wanted some fun. This year we did have a lot of people here, the weather was perfect, also incredibly hot for October.

Now how did we get this October holiday? Well we always had three holidays in October, the third is Francisco Morazan's birthday (he is a local hero from the 19th century), the twelfth is Columbus Day and the 21st is the Armed Forces Day. Well someone had the bright idea of instead of celebrating each day inidividually, we would just put them together and get a whole week off. Kids love this, you know, a whole week with no going to school. I think this is just a lazy way to lose time, but what do I know.

So in summary, over the year we have two holidays that stop the whole country for a week. I guess it is OK, people can't just be working all the time.

All tourists who come to this town end up coming here, it is called El Malecon, as you can see in October it sometimes gets rainy.
