What do you think about organ donation?

Organ transplantation is one of the miracles of modern medicine, but don't you feel a decrease in its application recently?

Organ transplantation becomes more and more seldom, and I cannot help but put a question to myself: why?".

Is it that perhaps our humanitarianism is waning? A very high level of sensitivity and generosity are involved in the act of donating one's organ for altruistic reasons to save a life. Altruism like this seems at a low in the present fast-moving world.

Everyone seems to be busy in his or her own living and welfare and has little time left for such self-sacrificial acts.

"Our humanity is being tested," said Dan Brock, a prominent ethicist.

Are we failing this test?

Another reason for this decline might be our perception about our own bodies. So many of us hold our physical selves to such a high degree of regard that we believe the human body is sacred and cannot be ruptured. Parting from a part of ourselves, even after death, can be daunting. Our bodies mean so much more to us; they represent our identities. This makes the act of organ donation so close to self and often a very hard decision to make.

"To know oneself is to protect oneself," said the philosopher. Is that why organ donation rates are declining?

Then there is the future: Artificial Intelligence. With rapid developments in AI and biotechnology, the redundancy of organ transplantation is not exactly too hard to believe. AI might just come along with revolutionary alternatives—lab-grown organs or synthetic replacements—and in that case, the need for human donors would dwindle.

What if the shortages of organs no longer existed—what if technology closed that gap between life and death?.

"The future belongs to those who prepare for it today," said a great visionary. Do we stand at the threshold of so much transformation?

The future, in a nutshell, will be promising, though the decline of organ transplantation is multifaceted. We must locate ourselves in these changes and resort to deep reflection on our values and on the way forward we desire to take as a society.

Will AI replace organ transplantation? Only time will show, but one thing is sure: the face of medicine and of humanity is changing right in front of our eyes.
