Have you ever had of the term "plasma chains"? Have you ever wondered how its operates and how it differs from the normal chains?
Well worry no more as we shall be discussing in details what plasma chain involves, and this lecture will be splitted into 4 parts.
What Is A Plasma Chain
A plasma chain can be explained to be a layer 2 scaling solution for blockchain networks that is created to improve the efficiency and scalability of decentralized systems.
Plasma Chain was introduced by Joseph poon and Vitalilk Buterin in a white paper with the title: "Plasma: Scalable Autonomous Smart Contract".
The main aim of smart contract is to provide solutions to challenges experienced by the traditional blockchain.
The role of plasma chain is very important, as we know the blockchain networks has been faced with challenges related to scalability.
And as time goes by, the more individuals come to learn and make use of the blockchain network and this will increase the number of transaction on the network,and here it's challenge of scalability becomes evident.
In this scenerio, the use of a layer 2 chain comes into play
Features Of Plasma Chain
There are different feature of plasma chain and we shall be discussing some of them now.
- Hierarchical Structure:
Plasma chain posseses an hierarchical structure, this implies that it is structured in an orderly manner.
The plasma chain has several child chains that is connected to a root chain, and the root chain is known to be the main blockchain eg bitcoin, while transaction is processed independently by the child chain.
- Smart Contract:
Just like the main chain, plasma chains have the ability to execute smart contract.
This allows for several dapps to be managed and run on these child chains.
- Reduced Load On Main Chain:
The main blockchain often experience reduced congestion by offloading transactions to the plasma chain,and this leads to a lower transaction fee and a faster transaction processing time.
This scalability on the chain can be achieved by parallelizing transaction processing across different chains.
- Security Through Merkle Trees:
Security of this chains is often ensured by the plasma chain through a periodic commitment of the state of the side chain to the main chain by making use of merkle tree commitment.
This can further be understood to be that the state of each plasma chain is hashed and anchored to the main chain, thus producing a verifiable and secured link.
- Exit Mechanism:
One Interesting feature of the plasma chain is its exit mechanism.
If any fraudulent activity is detected, users can easily leave the side chain and settle their asset on the main chain.
This exit mechanism is a very important component that guarantees the security and integrity of the system

It plays a huge role in reducing the work loads from the shoulders of the main chain, and this helps in the maintainance of blockchain scalability.
