When we met last, I introduced what plasma chains are and how it affects the main blockchain.

Differences Between Plasma Chain And Main Blockchain

There are some unique features that differentiate between a plasma chain and the main blockchain.

• Scalability Approach

One of the primary differences between the plasma chain and the main blockchain can be detected in their approach to scalability.

The main blockchain which we know as the base layer often encounter challenges of scalability as trading volume increases and this often leads to a higher transaction fee and a slower transaction times.

In contrast, the plasma chain function as a layer 2 scaling solution that is specially created to provide solutions to these challenges.

The plasma chain attempts to increase transaction throughput through the off-chain processing of transaction and then anchoring the summarized data into the main blockchain periodically

• Hierarchical Structure:

Another Important difference between the plasma chain and the main blockchain is the hierarchical structure found in the plasma chain.

While the plasma chain introduces and operates in an hierarchical manner, the main blockchain operates as a linear, singular chains of block.

In the plasma chain, multiple child chains are connected to the parent chain, and this structure permits for a more scalable and modular architecture, having each child chain with it's ability to independently process subset of transactions.

Ultimate authority is being retained by the parent chain and this ensures the integrity and security of the entire plasma chain system.

• Consensus Mechanism Variation:

Consensus Mechanism as we know form the fundamental of blockchain network, and their is a variation in their implementation between the plasma chain and the main blockchain.

The main blockchain often makes use of proof-of-work or the proof-of-stake for its consensus amongst it's network participants.

While the plasma chain employ different consensus model that are used for off-chain processing.

The specific design and use case of plasma chain greatly affects its choice of consensus mechanism, thus allowing for flexibility that are absent in more rigid consensus mechanism of main blockchain.

• Security Model:

Security is very important for all blockchain system.

The main blockchain guarantees it's security through the use of their native consensus mechanism, which is carefully built to ensure the integrity and Immutability of the distributed ledger.

The plasma chain on the other hand introduces an additional security mechanism for asset safety and dispute resolution, even while inheriting security from the main blockchain.

This extra layer of security is very important to maintain trust in off-chain transactions that are processed by plasma chain.

• TRANSACTION FINALITY:

Transaction finality is another difference between the plasma chain and the main blockchain.

Due to the consensus mechanism it implements, the main blockchain often have a longer confirmation time and this leads to a higher degree of finality.

While the plasma chain may offer a faster confirmation times when it comes to it's off-chain transactions, but are often required to wait for anchoring into the main blockchain for the ultimate confirmation.
