Do you know? Decentralized Applications (DApps) Explained
designed using canva Canva
I've you're one of those who do run airdrops, you can agree with me you've been hearing about dApps. Me personally, I've been hearing about dApps but didn't know what it means not until I made my research and guess what I found. It's more like Web 3 but different in many ways.
I've been hearing that a particular platform has many dApps and I was like, what are dApps? Could it be network of connected systems? You may want to know what dApps are. This post gives an insight to what dApps are and its features
Introduction to DApps |
---|
From the name, we an discern what DApps mean. The D in DApps mean Decentralized. The Apps is an acronym for Applications. So the term DApps mean Decentralized Applications. Is there more to this meaning? Decentralized Applications (DApps) are applications that look similar to mobile apps on your phone but it runs on blockchain networks and have functionalities of smart contracts unlike web 3 applications that runs only on a decentralized technology called Blockchain.

This smart-contract powered application called DApps today doesn't run on centralized servers. It is solely decentralized meaning, its peer-to-peer networks are decentralized with no central authority or control on its data. Generally, DApps has different use cases ranging from finance, gaming to social medias. On a distributes network, these DApps rely on smart contracts which makes it decentralized, resistant to attacks and transparent.
Features of Decentralized Applications |
---|
DApps has many features and you may wonder what a DApps looks like. It's not far from you. The Bitcoin we have today is a DApp and the first DApp. Why is it said that Bitcoin is a DApp? The following features of DApps justifies this.
- Cryptographically secured: All information on decentralized applications are stored on a decentralized and public Blockchain that's maintained and managed by multiple users. It's also Cryptographically secured in the sense that it relies solely on cryptograhic techniques like the use of protocols to encrypt and decrypt information in such a way that it's not readable by unauthorized people.

Decentralization: DApps operate without needing a central authority over the application. It's decentralized on a Blockchain making it resistant to censorship and no one entity has control over the application but multiple users.
Transparency: Data and transactions on DApps are visible to the public which enhances trust among users because theses DApps are built on transparent blockchains that are immutable.
Smart Contracts: As said earlier, DApps utilizes smart contracts which makes it possible for actions carried out on the Blockchain to be executed automatically based on predefined rules or conditions, eliminating intermediaries.
Governance: Since it's not controlled by a central authority, users can participate in decision-making processes as regards to developing and upgrading the application. This feature really makes it very outstanding and legitimate too.
Incentivization: Users can earn incentives or tokens by validating transactions and even contributing to its development since DApps do have their own native tokens as medium of exchange.
How does DApps work or operate? |
---|
They utilize Blockchain to store their data, execute smart contracts on the Blockchain and validate transactions too. Users can interact through user interface with the DApps which can be in the form of a web or even a mobile app. Once a user creates a transaction, the transaction is broadcasted to network of nodes running the DApp.

Before adding the transaction to the Blockchain, these nodes validate and execute the action taken the user until consensus is reached. There's more to this DApps. In my next post, I'll deliberate on the benefits of these DApps and why we should have knowledge on it......
