RE: Linstead Market Callaloo, in a can? ( thoughts )
In the USA, sometimes Chinese shops will have an African/Caribbean section for immigrants, and I've seen canned callaloo a few times. I've never bought it nor know anyone who's eaten it, but I shy away from any canned vegetables that aren't Indian style pickles I didn't make myself.
The equivalent of this where I'm from is "instant grits" for breakfast. No self-respecting southerner or midwesterner would be caught dead cooking instant grits.
Are you in Japan? Is that why you can't get fresh callaloo? If so, you may have access to amaranth leaves, something we ate a lot in Cambodia and now here in Suriname too. It's about the closest thing to callaloo.

The only reason I tried it was because some customers here requested it. Yeah, I am in Japan.
I have a small biz Jamaican goods web shop here. Interestingly callaloo grows here, just have to wait a bit till spring. Then I will have the fresh ones to eat & sell:). I really do not recommend this canned callaloo though lol
Wow, surprised it grows there in such a different climate. No shame, we're here in Suriname missing eating fresh mushrooms everyday, something we took for granted in Cambodia. We tried to cook with some canned mushrooms the other day, and needless to say, not trying that again. The Caribbean needs to step up the mushroom game.
Is true, mos aren't big on mushrooms in the Caribbean. Just takes one Rasta to start sing bout him mushroom soap and mushroom stew and the ting tek off. Mushroom are big in Japan, they have these special ones that go for 100s of $. Yeah I was surprised Callaloo could grow here too.
