SteemFoods: My Chilli Crabs in Sprite || Cebuano Cooking
Hello foodie Steemians! How are you doing all today? I hope you're having a great Thursday wherever you might be. Greetings from my beautiful country, the Philippines! 🇵🇭
For today, I prepared a dish which I called: Chilli Crabs in Sprite. Crabs, fish, shrimps and other seafoods are abundant here in the Philippines, as we are situated in many islands surrounded by seas and other bodies of water. Today, I'm going to cook my husband's freshly caught crabs from the seas of Mactan. Thanks my love @hulyootso! You're simply the best!
Let's start cooking!!!
These are the ingredients that I used in preparing this dish:
5 medium-sized crabs
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon of margarine/butter
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 of onion, chopped
1 piece tomato, sliced
8 pieces chilli (we call it here siling labuyo)
8 ounces of Sprite (soda/softdrinks)
1 sachet of Mama Sita's Oyster Sauce (about 2 tablespoons)
Salt and pepper to taste, a dash of ajinomoto
2 tablespoons spaghetti sauce (I ran out of tomato sauce, so I just used what is available in our kitchen)
Spring onions, chopped for garnish
The Cooking Process:
Step 1: Wash the crabs. You can use a brush in cleaning the crabs. Once the crabs are cleaned, use a colander to drain excess water.
Step 2: Prepare the garlic, onion, tomato by mincing or slicing. Prepare also the rest of the ingredients ready.
Step 3: In pan, put a tablespoon of oil and a tablespoon of butter/margarine.
Step 4: Once the butter/margarine melts, sauté the garlic.
Step 5: Stir in the onions until it caramelizes.
Step 6: Add the sliced tomatoes. Sauté until soft.
Step 7: Stir in the chillis (or siling labuyo). These chillis are small yet very spicy. This will give our dish its spicy kick!
Step 8: Once all spices are soft and incorporated well, creating a paste-like consistency, add in the crabs to the pan.
Step 9: Pour the Sprite (soda/softdrinks) to the crabs. This will give our dish its sweet sauce. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
I just bought an 8 oz. Sprite from a sari-sari store in the neighborhood. Commonly, they just transfer any soda from bottles to plastics.
Step 10: Add in the oyster sauce, salt and pepper to taste and a dash of ajinomoto.
Step 11: Add 2 tablespoons of spaghetti sauce (I ran out of tomato sauce, so I just used what is available).
Step 12: Let it simmer for 5-8 minutes.
And voila, our Chilli Crabs in Sprite is ready! Dig in! A seafood dish where the spiciness of the chillis, the sweetness of the Sprite and the umami flavor of the crabs and oyster sauce all in one plate!!!
I hope you could also try this at home with your family and friends. I would really love to hear your reviews.
