Baking Pies with My Students || Learning New Skills: Building Business-Minded Young Adults

Hello SteemFoods buddies!!! How are you today? I hope everything is well. Always be safe wherever you are today. Greetings from the Philippines! 🇵🇭

As a teacher, it is one of my greatest joys seeing my students learn new skills and applying these at home or using these acquired skills in small scale business. With our Cookery class, I always remind them that when you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Because you're enjoying it, and there's no feeling of burden in doing it and being tired is never in your vocabulary. We prepare our students either for the next step in education, for employment or for self-employment/business. And always, I remind them to always cook from the heart, to always think of the person/s to whom you're cooking the dish for.

So for today, I will be sharing with you one of our cooking activities at school with my students: PIE MAKING. I divided them into three groups and assigned them to bake pizza, buko/coconut pie and empanada. Aside from cooking, I also let them make a packaging that they think would add to the aesthetic appeal of their product, makes it more saleable and beautifully wrapped/packaged.

The first group prepared Empanada. It is made of pie crust shaped like a half-moon or pockets with meat, vegetables like minced/grated carrots, potatoes, raisins, eggs and cheese in them and baked or fried.

The second group prepared their Ham and Cheese Pizza but theirs with lots of white onions because they like the sweetness of it. They prepared the crust, spread some pizza sauce and topped it with ham, cheese, white onions and chopped parsley.

The third group baked their Buko/Coconut Pie. It is made with pie crust with sweetened coconut filling that's made with young coconut meat, sweetened with condensed milk.

I made them prepare their boxes the day before we had our cooking activity.

With this activity, I want them to learn something new on baking or cooking. I also want them to market their product by creating a packaging that will catch the attention of their customers. Because how the product or food is wrapped or packaged is what makes it saleable. Of course, that is still secondary to taste. A good food is it's own marketing.

That's it for today friends! Ciao! I shall see you again on our next blog. Thanks for dropping by.

Always,
Rose
