Best Halo-Halo in Town | Streetfood Contest Entry

in SteemFoods3 years ago (edited)

Hello to all steemians, especially to the lovely people of steemfoods community around the world. I hope you are all well and safe.

My Favorite Streetfood

Today I will feature a streetfood restaurant that sells the all time favorite Filipino dessert called Halo-Halo. The restaurant is called Sol's Halo-Halo but before we talk about why this is my favorite streetfood restaurant I want to talk about what Halo-Halo is. Halo-Halo translated to English literally means "mix-mix", this is because you have to mix all the ingredients first before you get to taste all its glory. Yes it's that good.

Its basic ingredients are shaved ice, evaporated milk, and sugar. It's similar to Korean Bingsoo or the Japanese counterpart Kakigori. What sets Halo-Halo apart are the addition a wide array of fun ingredients that is truly Filipino. The usual ingredients are Ube, coconut strips, caramelised bananas, tapioca pearls, colorful agar jellies or what we call gulaman, fresh slices of jackfruit, sweetened red beans, rice crispies for added texture, and the highlight ingredient, Leche flan.

What makes Sol's Halo-Halo so special is that they upgraded the traditional Halo-Halo with modern twists. Instead of using shaved ice they use shaved Milk ice which make the dish ten times better. Instead of using rice crispies they use cornflakes and instead of using sweetened Ube or purple yam, they add a scoop of Ube Ice cream. They also don't add sugar to the slices of fruits to preserve their natural flavors. These slight upgrades make Sol's Halo-Halo so special. It's layer upon layer of goodness mixed together to create this refreshing dessert with so many interesting textures and colors.

The Menu

They only sell two options on the menu. They have the regular Halo-Halo which doesn't have the Ube Ice cream priced at 60.00 Pesos or is about 1.25 USD and the Special Halo-Halo which has a scoop of Ube Ice cream at 70.00 Pesos or 1.45 USD. We ordered 5 special Halo-Halo for this trip and our total bill is only 350.00 pesos or 7.22 USD. Not bad for 5 generous servings of Halo-Halo.

The Interior And Exterior

This shop is a kiosk type shop located in the middle of two busy roads. What you do is you order from the shop and enjoy your halo-halo on the benches available outside like we did in the photos.

The Location

Sol's started their business in Labangon in Cebu City, Philippines and quickly expanded into many locations since 2016. The one we visited was the closest to us and is located at Pueblo Verde Tamiya, Basak, Lapu-Lapu City. This is a franchise outlet under Julies Food house (which explains the name on the receipt). This store is ideally located in a busy business hub which is also close to many retail establishments and a terminal.

Look at those lovely medley of colors and flavours!

This is the official snack or dessert every summer in the Philippines so be sure to drop by any Sol's outlet and get your Halo-Halo fix to cool down the summer heat. If you haven't had Halo-Halo from Sol's then you are missing out.

And to all our fellow steemians not from the Philippines, you can make your own version of Halo-Halo or you can visit the Famous Filipino Fastfood Chowking in your area.

And that's it for my Entry for the Steemfoods Favorite street food restaurant highlighting our favorite dessert. Thank you for the support and I hope to see all the amazing entries for this contest.
