Food in Volunteering Center during the War
When russia started war of aggression in Ukraine, my life has changed completely. Changes touched every little thing in my life: the city of living, the activities, people around me. And, of course, food around me.
Before 24.02.2022 I was working in Kyiv as smm manager and web site administrator. Now I'm in Kamianets-Podilskyi, and my main activity is to produce matrasses and camouflage nets for Armed Forces of Ukraine. I go to volunteering center almost every day, and work there from 10 am to 5-6 pm.
As we work there pretty long, another volunteers come to feed us. This was their idea, we could take some food for lunch with ourselves, from home. But war times it's when all society is so united that no one can stay aside without trying to help.
This is a typical lunch from church volunteers, for example:
This lunch consists of:
- rice
- cabbage salad
- fish chop
- a thin pancake with apples (pancakes in Ukrainian: mlynci or nalysnyky).
Church volunteers bring us lunches everyday from Monday to Friday at 2 pm.
Another examples of lunches from church volunteers⬇️
- mushroom soup
- mashed potatoes
- fermented cabbage
- sausage
- Ukrainian borscht
- mashed potatoes
- fermented cabbage
So, as I told, church volunteers bring us lunches everyday except weekends. And on Saturday and Sunday people from our volunteering center prepare lunches by themselves. Lunches include:
- sandwiches
- apples
- tea
- bakery, candies
Sometimes during the work time one great man, a refugee Oleksandr (formally, he's internally displaced person), brings us pancakes which he bakes by himself:
When Oleksandr comes, everyone takes a little break and enjoys the delicious homemade bakery.
And this is the example of fast dinner which is usually made by my dad:
- herring with onions, vinegar, and sunflower oil
- boiled potatoes
Hard time = plain food, friends. But the main thing is to have food, any. Many Ukrainian people are dying from starvation now – people on the occupied by russian troops territories. If we only could share our food with them... If only we could...

Я назавтра хотіла купити рибу, якусь салаку чи тюльку). Щоб не дорого і ситно. Теж хочу картошку в мундірі а до неї солоної риби. Хотіла. А пост почитала в точно куплю.
