Shadows on the banks of the rivers

St. Petersburg is located in the delta of the Neva River. Before reaching the Gulf of Finland, the Neva River is divided into several branches. Many rivers and canals flow within the city. Durable granite embankments with beautiful lattices are arranged along the river banks. One morning I took some photographs of the shadows of the bars of some embankments and bridges.

This is a fairly common lattice pattern; it is located on the Moika River. Work on the improvement of the embankment and the installation of cast-iron grates with such a pattern on the Moika River began in 1798. The same grilles appeared on some bridges later.

The lattice pattern on the Fontanka River looks a bit simpler, but it is whiter openwork. Granite embankments were built on the Fontanka River in the 1780s. The Fontanka River and the Moika River cross the central part of the city. Granite slabs of the embankment are clearly visible in the photo below.
