#writingchallenge02 - My Favorite Movie. (A Dad Transitions From 'Code Is Law' To 'Principle'.)

in GEMS4 years ago

Once in the old days, i was cajoled into watching 'Shrek'. I didn't know i could watch it. I ended up watching the entire Shrek movie. That was the very first animation movie that i ever watched. I managed to enjoy it but i never re-watched it. Shrek ended up having an intense story-line along with a measure of subtle humor.

It was generally hard for me to watch animation movies in the past and that is the case till date. It wasn't realistic enough and it was even harder to watch when the characters aren't possessing of a 'conventional form'. What do i mean? Recall how the characters in the 'Southpark' cartoon look, drawn in caricature form? This is how the 'Shrek' movie character looked to me at first glance, combined with the fact that it an animation type movie.

This said, i can easily say that my favorite movie is 'The Croods' and it is an animation movie. Once gain, i was cajoled into watching it by someone who felt that one of the characters in this movie was a reflection of me and that turned out true.

'The Croods' is practically a family; 'kids, husband, a wife and a feisty grandma, who simply never quits. 'The Croods' lived in fear, in the nooks and crannies of the mountains, weary of animal attacks and in fear of the unknown.

This family had a 'giant dad', giant in character, stubborn and quite strict; with good reason. Father he was to 'a daughter' who was quite like him but who attempted to be explorative due to her undying curiosity. She was young, very feisty, strong-charactered and these attributes relegated some of her fears.

Grandma was lax in her approach to life, she just wanted to apply her latter years to 'living her best life'.

Mum was like a hybrid of 'Dad and daughter'. She understood her daughter's curiosity and dad's fears. Her role thus was to maintain 'familyhood' (a home) even in the midst of their overall chaotic eco-sphere.

I apologize, i hardly take note of the names of movie characters. Besides, Dad, daughter, grandma and mum, there were two other kids making up 'The Croods', but they weren't prominent in the overall story-line.

Dad had only one rule that he had stuck by all his life and to good effect. He has managed to live long within these chaotic dungeons, carrying his family along. Too, he has passed this one rule across to his family and it was this; 'Do not leave the caves'.

He was strict and had very strong reservation with regards to adjusting this rule. However, whenever this rule was broken and danger ensues, his 'fatherly instincts' kicked in as he sets out to create protection for this family, without reservations.

Alas, his daughter was growing older and her wings too. She was bound to break her dad's rule soon and this began to happened, with graver consequences than she expected. She would try to see reason with her dad and return to living by his rule but only temporarily for her youth and curiosity constituted a huge part of her huge character.

Came along, 'a boy', a young boy, a stranger. He begins to cross paths with 'The Crood' family as he undertakes his own escapades. Curiosity it is, that has led him there. He was seeking a life of less chaos too, more lights; 'the Sun'.

He has seen glimpses of the sun for the first time and he was following its trail. Along these routes, he came across 'The Croods' but first he came across 'The Croods' daughter' and it wasn't 'love at first sight'; it was 'curiosity at first sight'.

With a series of ensuing adventures, Dad started to adjust. He gave in to some learning and started to apply 'principle', away from his once very 'strict rule'. More exploration came about as they all began to seek 'the Sun', leaving the caves more often.

His daughter had taught him 'principle'. He was an 'evolving dad' but he was a dad all the same and when push came to shove and he needed to stand in to protect his family, he didn't care about his rules/principles as 'keeping his family safe' has always been the underlying rule/principle and "never leave the cave" was only one of many ways to accomplish this.

As for the person who said that i should watch 'The Croods' as i would see myself in it; she was very right!

Your boy Terry
