(ESP-ENG) Superestructuras de Venezuela: Puente Angostura / Venezuela superstructures: Angostura Bridge

Aparte de su extraordinaria belleza natural, cuando viajé al estado Bolívar otra cosa que me impresionó fueron sus puentes, grandes obras de ingeniería que se han convertido en icono de esta gran y rica región venezolana.

Aside from its extraordinary natural beauty, when I traveled to the Bolívar state another thing that impressed me was its bridges, great engineering works that have become an icon of this great and rich Venezuelan region.

Aprovechando unos días libres visité a un tío que en ese momento vivía en Ciudad Bolívar, capital de este estado, y me llevó a conocer varios sitios, entre ellos el Puente Angostura y el Puente Orinoquia, lugares imperdibles si te encuentras por esta parte de Venezuela.

I had a few days off and I visited an uncle who at the time was living in Ciudad Bolívar, capital of this state. He took me to know several places, including the Angostura Bridge and the Orinoquia Bridge, unmissable places if you are in this part of Venezuela.

En este post les hablaré del Puente Angostura, el primero levantado sobre el mayor río del país, el Orinoco, y que une los estados Anzoátegui y Bolívar, específicamente las poblaciones de Soledad y Ciudad Bolívar.

In this post I will talk you about the Angostura Bridge, the first one built over the largest river in the country, the Orinoco, and that unites the states of Anzoátegui and Bolívar, specifically the towns of Soledad and Ciudad Bolívar.

La primera ruta que hice con mi tío en Ciudad Bolívar fue al Paseo Orinoco, un malecón en el centro de la urbe que tiene magníficas vistas del río y también a lo lejos del Puente Angostura.

The first route that I did with my uncle in Ciudad Bolívar was to Paseo Orinoco, a boardwalk in the center of the city that has magnificent views of the river and also of the Angostura Bridge.

Al verme admirándolo me dijo que iríamos a atravesarlo con el carro para que lo conociera de cerca. Queda a unos 5 km de Ciudad Bolívar, en el sector Punta Chacón, donde está la parte más estrecha del río, razón por la cual le dieron el nombre de “Angostura” a este puente.

Seeing me admiring it, he told me that we were going to cross it with the car so that I would get to know it up close. It is about 5 km from Ciudad Bolívar, in the Punta Chacón sector, where the narrowest part of the river is, which is why this bridge was named "Angostura" (narrowness).

Nos montamos en su viejo LTD y fuimos hacia allá, el día estaba soleado, perfecto para hacer buenas fotos de esta superestructura, considerada como una de las joyas de la ingeniería en Venezuela, no sólo por la complejidad de su construcción sino también porque contribuyó al desarrollo de la nación al convertirse en un enlace más rápido y seguro entre el sur y los demás estados del país ya que anteriormente los vehículos tenían que cruzar el río en chalanas o ferrys.

We got into his old LTD and went there, the day was sunny, perfect for taking good photos of this superstructure, considered one of the jewels of engineering in Venezuela, not only because of the complexity of its construction but also because it contributed to the development of the nation by becoming a faster and safer link between the south and the other states of the country, since previously vehicles had to cross the river on barges or ferries.

Mientras íbamos llegando al puente le pedí a mi tío que bajara la velocidad para poder ver mejor el paisaje y también tomar fotos. “No te preocupes lo verás dos veces, de ida y vuelta”, me dijo.

As we were getting to the bridge I asked my uncle to slow down so that I could see better the scenery and also take photos. "Don't worry, you'll see it twice, back and forth," he told me.

Hubiese querido que nos bajáramos del carro para poder pasar más tiempo allí observando el paisaje desde el puente, pero mi tío me dijo que para hacer eso con seguridad teníamos que haber estacionado el carro antes de pasar sobre el puente e irnos caminando y él no confiaba mucho en dejar su carro parado por ahí jajaja, así que no… pero igual como dijo, lo vi de ida y vuelta y además sentí cómo se mueve por el peso de los vehículos.

I would have wanted us to get off the car so we could spend more time there watching the scenery from the bridge, but my uncle told me that to do that safely we had to park the car before going over the bridge and then walking, and he didn't trust a lot in leaving his car standing there hahaha, so no ... but just as he said, I saw it back and forth and also felt how it moves by the weight of the vehicles.

Soy fan de la arquitectura, cuando visito algún lugar siempre me fijo en las edificaciones y si son tan llamativas como este puente, me pongo a investigar luego sobre su historia, los detalles de su construcción.

I'm a fan of architecture, when I visit a place I always look at the buildings and constructions and if they are as striking as this bridge, I start to investigate later on its history.

Al buscar información en Internet encontré que el Puente Angostura fue inaugurado el 6 de enero de 1967 y que su construcción se inició a finales de 1962, es decir tomó cuatro años culminarlo.

When searching for information on the Internet, I found that the Angostura Bridge was inaugurated on January 6, 1967 and that its construction began in late 1962, that is, it took four years to complete.

La obra estuvo a cargo de Paúl Lustgarten, ingeniero nacido en Ciudad Bolívar y que trabajaba en el Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOP), ente encargado en aquella época del desarrollo de la infraestructura púbica en Venezuela.

The work was carried out by Paúl Lustgarten, an engineer born in Ciudad Bolívar and working at the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), the entity in charge at that time of developing public infrastructure in Venezuela.

Su construcción la ejecutó el Consorcio Puente Orinoco, conformado por la empresa venezolana Precomprimido C.A. y la United Status Steel International Ltd, ubicada en Pittsburgh (EEUU).

Its construction was carried out by the Puente Orinoco Consortium, made up of the Venezuelan company Precomprimido C.A. and United Status Steel International Ltd, located in Pittsburgh (USA).

En la Ficha Técnica oficial que encontré del proyecto se describen los materiales que se utilizaron para hacerlo realidad: “concreto armado para fundaciones y anclajes, acero para el puente colgante, tablero y pilones y concreto postensado para los puentes de acceso”.

The materials that were used to make it come true are described in the official Technical Data Sheet that I found for the project: “reinforced concrete for foundations and anchors, steel for the suspension bridge, board and pylons and post-tensioned concrete for the access bridges”.

En cuanto a sus dimensiones tiene una longitud total en armazón metálico de 1.678,50 metros, de los cuales 1.272 corresponden al puente colgante. La altura de las torres principales que soportan el tendido de los cables es de 119,20 metros, el ancho del tablero donde están distribuidos cuatro canales de circulación más las aceras es de 16,60 metros y el gálibo (distancia entre la parte inferior de la superestructura y el nivel medio del curso de agua) es de 51 metros, acorde con la norma internacional para el tránsito de embarcaciones bajo la estructura.

Regarding its dimensions, it has a total length in metal frame of 1,678.50 meters, of which 1,272 correspond to the suspension bridge. The height of the main towers that support the laying of the cables is 119.20 meters, the width of the board where four channels of circulation are distributed plus the sidewalks is 16.60 meters and the gauge (distance between the bottom of the superstructure and the average level of the watercourse) is 51 meters, in accordance with the international standard for boat traffic under the structure.

En esta impresionante obra de ingeniería trabajaron alrededor de 1500 personas y al momento de su inauguración era el puente colgante más largo de Latinoamérica y el noveno en el mundo.

Around 1,500 people worked on this impressive engineering work and at the time of its inauguration it was the longest suspension bridge in Latin America and the ninth in the world.

Aunque han pasado 53 años de su inauguración y en 2006 se inauguró el segundo puente sobre el río Orinoco, llamado Orinoquia, esta superestructura reconocida como Patrimonio Nacional sigue siendo impactante a la vista y una obra de vialidad muy importante para conectar el norte con el sur de Venezuela, región que sigue aportando sus enormes riquezas mineras, forestales e hidroeléctricas para el desarrollo del país.

Although 53 years have passed since its construction and in 2006 the second bridge over the Orinoco river, called Orinoquia, was inaugurated, this superstructure recognized as National Heritage is still impressive to the eye and a very important road work to connect the north with the south Venezuela, a region that continues to contribute its enormous mining, forestry and hydroelectric wealth for the development of the country.
