You may wonder thinking what's a 'festive Thala' can be? Well, 'Thala' means 'plate' in Bangla and a Festive 'Thala' means it must have 'polao' (fragrant steamed rice), curry, chicken, salad, fry, dal, and chatni. It's more or less the same in every region of our country, Bangladesh and on almost every occasion.

And, by saying so there's no need to mention that 'polao' is one of our major dishes during every occasion. It's a rice-based dish which is our absolute favorite. From a family program to a huge festival, serving it to guests or in weeding Polao is a must.

When I saw the major ingredients of this week's Qurator's: Hive Top Chef! is Rice, I couldn't think anything else than Polao. You can share your 'rice' recipe also. Click on the link for more detail.

Polao

Before you go through the detailed recipe one thing I want to tell you. As we use a lot of 'Masala' and different ingredients in our dishes it doesn't mean you have to use every single of it. Believe me, if you skip some of it (not slat LOL) it will not make a major difference. Just the taste will be a little less. That's it. I'm saying it because I have seen many don't try to cook any of these dishes because they don't have 'all' the ingredients.

Let's see how we can prepare Polao!

What we need?

  • Fragrant rice
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Chilli
  • Garam Masala (cinnamon, mace, peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and cardamom pods)
  • Ginger and garlic paste
  • Onion

How we have to prepare it?

Soak the rice in water for five minutes.

Put all the masala, onion slices, ginger & garlic paste into vegetable oil. Make it golden brown.

Put the rice in and fry it for a minute.

Add hot water. The water must be double the amount of rice. Add salt, a pinch of sugar, and some green chilli.

Cook it in medium heat. It will take 20-25 minutes to be ready.

TaDa..It's ready to serve.

Now you can add any curry, roast, fry with it. It's ready to make anyone happy!
