Double Labour: A tapestry artwork
Hello, art lovers!
My today's tapestry artwork on canvas is about the struggles of African women. Although things are changing now, it is not uncommon to see African women struggling and hustling at multiple fronts in order to keep their families together. A typical African woman back then might be cooking in the kitchen, washing the family's dirty clothes, and at the same time, attending to a crying baby by backing him or her.
I created a tapestry artwork dedicated solely to the multiple struggles of African women. It is titled 'double struggle' and it is as below:
The artwork was created using wools on canvas. It depicts a woman backing her baby while carrying a big bowl on her head and trudging down the village road. She is also holding a staff to support her weight.
How the artwork was created
- A sketch of the concept was made on a 3+ ft by 2 ft cardboard.
- The outline of the sketch was traced using black wool.
- The remaining colors were fixed using the appropriate wool colors.
- Framing of the entire artwork was carried out.
