We know this because gold has been our example.

If you had used your $20 US dollars to buy 1 ounce of gold back in 1933 you'd have, well an ounce of gold.

If you held that ounce of gold until today and sold it back for US dollars again, well you'd have about $1,770 US dollars.

Now lets go talk to that poor sap who had been holding his $20 under a mattress for the last 87 years and see how value value that is worth.

Hint, it's still $20 but it has 99% less buying power.
