La Leyenda de los Volcanes Popocatépetl y Iztaccíhuatl /The Legend of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl Volcanoes

Según estudios paleomagnéticos realizados al volcan Popocatépetl demuestran que este volcán puede tener mas de 730.000 años y Iztaccíhuatl tiene aproximadamente 1.09 millones de años.

According to paleomagnetic studies carried out on the Popocatépetl volcano, they show that this volcano can be more than 730,000 years old and Iztaccíhuatl is approximately 1.09 million years old.

Dicha leyenda tiene varias versiones pero para efecto de esta publicación presentaré una de las más conocidas.

La leyenda relata a un guerrero cuyo nombre es Popocatépetl del náhuatl popo-ca "que humea" y te-petl "montaña o monte".

Y en el caso del nombre de la princesa Iztaccíhuatl del náhuatl Iztac, "blanco" y cihuatl "mujer", debido a que la imagen del volcan simula a una mujer dormida, que se encuentra cubierta por un manto blanco.

Dice la leyenda que hace miles de años el cacique de los Tlaxcaltecas tomó la decisión de luchar contra los Aztecas por la libertad de su pueblo, este cacique tenia una hermosa hija, la princesa Iztaccíhuatl, quien se enamoró de uno de los jovenes guerreros mas valiente y apuesto del pueblo llamado Popocatépetl.

Con el permiso del cacique la pareja se preparaba para realizar la boda cuando los ejercitos enemigos atacaron y entonces el cacique designó liderizar la misión a Popocatépetl.

Popocatépetl y Iztaccíhuatl se prometieron amor y la princesa le juró que lo esperaría a su regreso y el padre de la princesa se comprometió que a su regreso lo recibiría con una gran celebración para concederle la mano de su hija si triunfaba en la guerra.

Luego de transcurrido un tiempo otro guerrero rival de Popocatépetl que estaba celoso del amor de la princesa, llego a donde la princesa para darle una noticia falsa de que Popocatépetl había muerto en combate.

Tras la noticia recibida la princesa cayó en una depresión y no comía, al poco tiempo murió.

Al regreso de Popocatépetl triunfador esperanzado de encontrarse con la princesa, se encontró con la noticia de la muerte de su amada, el dolor fue tal que estuvo caminando sin sentido por las calles durantes dias y luego regresó para mandar hacer una enorme tumba para su amada princesa hecho con diez enormes cerros que fueron acumulados formando una gran montaña.

Una vez culminada la tumba, agarró a la prinesa en sus brazos y la llevo a la cima de la montaña, tras darle un beso póstumo coloco una antorcha humeante y se arrodillo frente al cuerpo de su amada, prometiendole velar su sueño eternamente.

Esa es la imágen que se visualiza de los dos volcanes cubiertos por la nieve.
