[Esp/Eng] Mi retrato de Ringo Starr para celebrar sus 80 años / My Ringo Starr´s portrait to celebrate his 80th birthday
Greetings community!
Last week on July 7th, Ringo Starr turned 80, and of course we have to celebrate it. I saw him on tv and it surprised me how young he looks, you can´t believe he is that age, I also love to see that he stills has that sympathy and good vibe that identifies him.
El más joven de los Beatles (por ser el último en entrar a la agrupación) pero el mayor en edad junto a Lennon (aunque Ringo le lleva exactamente 3 meses a John), nació en el seno de una familia pobre en el N° 9 de Madryn Street, Liverpool 8, en 1940. Cuando tenía 3 años, su padre, un panadero, los abandonó a él y su madre, por lo que la vida para ellos dos se tornó más dura y difícil. Para variar, cuando Ringo tenía 6 años, contrajo una grave peritonitis que lo mantuvo un año en el hospital y otro año más convaleciente en su casa, lo que hizo que perdiera dos años de escuela. Aprendió a leer a los 9 años, pero, y aunque nos parezca increíble, sólo sabe escribir fonéticamente ya que de niño nunca pudo aprender a escribir, algo que dice lamentar mucho ya que le ha impedido poder ampliar sus conocimientos.
The youngest of the Beatles (because he was the last to join the band), but the oldest with Lennon (although Ringo is exactly 3 months older than John) was born inside a poor family in the N° 9 of Madryn Street, Liverpool 8, in 1940. When he was 3 years old, his father, a baker, left him and his mother so life turned hard for them. If this wasn´t enough, at the age of 6, Ringo catched a serious peritonitis that forced him to stay one year in the hospital and one more year convalescent at home, so he lost two years of school. He learned to read at 9 but, although we may don´t believe it, he only knows to write phonetically because he never learned to do it as it is, this is something he regrets because he says that has blocked him to extend his knowledge.
De pequeño sentía mucha atracción por conocer y recorrer todo el mundo así que soñaba con ser un vagabundo ya que estos van a todas partes. Ringo fue un niño muy enfermizo, a los 13 años contrajo pleuresía y luego tuberculosis, lo que significó volver a pasar un años entero en el hospital. Sin embargo, y como suele suceder en la vida, no hay mal que por bien no venga y durante esa larga estancia, comenzó a tocar el tambor como parte de las clases de música que impartían en el hospital para entretener a los niños enfermos. Ringo formaba parte de la banda del hospital.
When he was a child his dream was to travel around the world so he wanted to be a vagabond because they go everywhere. Ringo was a sickly kid, at the age of 13 he catched pleuresy and then tuberculosis, so one more time, he passed a year in the hospital. However and as it ussual happens in life, every cloud has a silver lining, and during that long stay, he started to play the drum as part of the music classes organized by the hospital, to entertain the patient. Ringo was part of the hospital´s band.
Cuando tenía 15 años se hizo aprendiz de mecánico para evadir el servicio militar, así que de ahí en adelante, trabajaba de día y por las noches tocaba la batería. Esa batería, su primera batería de verdad, se la regaló su familia en Navidad, costó 12 libras y todos sus familiares aportaron dinero para comprarla. La práctica va forjando al maestro así que Ringo no tardó en dominar los ritmos de moda y se convirtió en músico semi-profesional, cambió su nombre real, Richard por Ringo (en alusión a los anillos que siempre solía llevar) y acortó su apellido, Starkey a Starr. El nombre que lo llevará a la inmortalidad estaba firmado.
At the age of 15 he started to work as a mechanic apprentice to avoid military service, so during the day he was working and at night he was playing the drums. That drums, his first real drums were a christmas gift he received from his family, the whole family reunite money to pay the 12 pounds that costed. Practice makes the master so in a short time Ringo learned to perform the new sound that was in the radio and he turned into a semi-professional musician, he changed his real name from Richard to Ringo (allusive to the many rings he used to wear) and he cut his surname from Starkey to Starr. The name that will take him to immortality was signed.
El destino va eligiendo a sus protagonistas y Pete Best no estaba en sus planes para que fuese parte de la leyenda que iba naciendo. No en vano, cuando algo es para ti, ni que te quietes, así que Ringo Starr, sin proponérselo, entraba para completar y darle un mejor sonido a una banda que ya conocía pero con la que jamás se imaginó que su vida cambiaría por completo. Los Beatles. El resto es historia.
Destiny chooses the protagonists and Pete Best wasn´t in those plans to be part of the uncoming legend. As they say, when something is for you, will find you, so Ringo Starr, without planning this was invited to complete and improve the sound of a band he already knew but with who he never imagined that would change his life completely. The Beatle. Rest is history.
A propósito de esta maravillosa celebración, quiero compartir con ustedes un retrato que hice de Ringo hace unos años atrás. Pues si, me encanta dibujar, sobretodo hacer retratos. El proceso del paso a paso no lo puedo poner porque no lo tengo, no lo documenté en su momento pero les daré una breve reseña de lo que recuerdo cuando lo hice. Llevaba más de una año dibujando distintas figuras del rock y sólo me faltaba Ringo para completar a los Beatles así que me puse a revisar los libros que tiene mi hermana de los Beatles (es una gran fan) y me gustó una foto donde Ringo sale sonriendo, así que decidí que haría mi retrato basándome en esa foto. Empecé por los ojos, siempre empiezo por los ojos porque siento que si no logro captar la mirada no vale la pena seguir con ese retrato. No en vano dicen que los ojos son el espejo del alma. Usé diferentes números de lápiz de grafito, cartulina blanca y varios tipos de borras.
Speaking of this wonderful celebration I want to share with you a portrait I did some years ago of Ringo. Well, yes, I love to draw, specially to do portraits, I can´t post the making of because I did this some years ago and I don´t have it but I will give you a review of what I remember when I did it. I had a year making portraits of many rock musicians and I only needed Ringo to complete the Beatles, so I checked the books that my sister has of the Beatles (she loves them) and I liked a photo where he is smiling, so I decided to do my portrait based in that photo. I started with the eyes, I always start with the eyes because I feel that if I can´t capture the look, doesn´t worth to continue with that portrait. Not in vain they say that eyes are the mirror of the soul. I used different numbers of graphite pencils, white bristol board and many types of erasers.
Al contrario de lo que pensé antes de trazar las primeras líneas, no tuve mayores complicaciones para dibujar a Ringo.
Contrary to what I thought before start to draw the first lines, I didn´t have much complications to make Ringo.
Una vez logrados los ojos y las cejas, proseguí con la nariz, le di forma al rostro y me concentré en la boca, que fue lo que me pareció más difícil.
Once the eyes and eyebrows were ready I did the nose and the contour of the face and then I concentrated in the mouth, this was the most difficult part.
Continué el dibujo dándole la forma correcta al mentón e hice las líneas del cuello. Ahora si ya no cabía duda que tenía a Ringo pero…le faltaba lo más importante ¿qué será? Pues el cabello jejeje, no hay Beatle sin cabello.
I continued giving the right shape to the chin and I did neck´s lines. There was no doubt That I had Ringo, but something was missing, the most important, what you think? The hair hehehe, there is no Beatle without hair.
Dibujar el cabello fue muy divertido y disfruté cada pelo que fue trazando. Jmm, esto cada vez se veía mejor jeje.
Draw the hair was funny and I enjoyed every single line. Jmm, this looks even better now hehe.
Lo último que dibujé fue el cuello de la camisa y la chaqueta y una vez listo esto me dediqué a perfeccionar los toques de luz y sombra. Ahora si mi retrato de Ringo Starr estaba listo. Quedé muy satisfecha con este trabajo y me sigue gustando ¿Qué dicen ustedes?

The last thing I did was the shirt´s neck and the jacket. Then was time to focus and give the touch of shadows and light. Ready! My portrait of Ringo was finished. I remember to feel very satisfied with the result and still I am. What you think people?
