Agua para las aves / Water for the birds

Hoy les traigo una propuesta muy fácil y divertida para que reutilicen los envases de plástico a favor de las aves de su vecindario. Me encanta reciclar, no solo por la importancia que tiene desde el punto de vista ecológico sino también para hacer cosas que puedan realmente ser útiles. Vivo en una ciudad bastante calurosa con un sol muy fuerte y que tiene una gran variedad de aves que hacen vida entre los árboles, las casas y los edificios que forman parte de ella. Como buena observadora que soy había notado como las aves se posaban en las rejas y techos de mi edificio buscando sombra y con el pico abierto en señal de calor y sed. Suelo guardar los envases de vidrio para almacenar especias y condimentos y los de plástico para diferentes usos del momento o que se me puedan ocurrir mas adelante. Así fue como una mañana, cuando se me terminó la margarina y vi ese envase de tamaño y forma diferentes a los que tengo, lo primero en lo que pensé fue en un bebedero para las aves que visitan mi edificio. Esperé tener tres envases y me puse manos a la obra.

Today I come with a very easy and funny proposal to recycle the plastic containers for the benefit of your neighbourhood birds. I love to recycle, not just for the importance that recycle has for ecology but also to do things that can really be useful. I live in a warm city with a hot sun that has a big variety of birds living between our trees, houses and buildings. I´m a very observant person and I have noticed many birds sitting on the grills and floor of the terrace of my building, looking thirsty with their open breaks and searching for shade. I use to keep glass containers for spices and condiments and the plastic ones for different ideas that can occur to me. That´s how one morning when the margarine ended and I saw that container with a different shape and size from those I have, the first thing I thought was in a watering place for the birds that visit my building. Well, I waited to have three of them and said: lets get down to work.

Hacerlos es súper sencillo, económico y divertido. Necesitarán:

To do them is very easy, economic and fun. You´ll need:

• Uno o más envases plásticos de su gusto (preferiblemente que no sean muy hondos).

• One or more plastic containers (preferable not very deep).

• Pinturas, las que tengan, puede ser témpera, pintura al frío, óleo e incluso, esmalte de uñas.

• Paint, whatever you have, watercolour, trempera, oil, even nail polish.

• Pega blanca

• White glue

• Pinceles

• Brushes

• Alambre o hilo

• Wire or thread

• Una vara de metal

• Metallic staff

• Encendedor

• Lighter

Una vez que el producto se haya terminado, lavan bien el envase, dejan que se seque totalmente y ¡Comienza la magia!

Once the product is over, wash the container very well and let dry. Now, magic starts!

El primer paso es pintar el envase con la pintura que dispongan y del color que les guste. Cuando este seco ya pueden escribir o dibujar lo que quieran, en mi caso, escribí agua y agüita, puse unas gotas, dibuje unos pájaros y unas flores y los pinté con pintura al frio y esmalte de uñas.

First step is paint the container with the paint you have and the color you like. Once dry, you can write or draw what you want, in my case, I wrote water, put on some drops, birds and flowers and I painted them with watercolour and nail polish.

Dejan secar 24 horas y al día siguiente los van a cubrir con pega blanca usando un pincel mediano o grueso, esto impermeabilizará la pintura y la hará más resistente al sol y a la lluvia.

Let them dry 24 hours and the next day you´ll cover all the painted part with white glue using a medium or thick brush, this will make the painting (your artwork) waterproof and more resistent to sun and rain.

El próximo paso es hacer unos agujeros al envase, pueden hacerlos antes o después de haberlos pintado, yo los hice antes. Estos nos servirán para pasar el alambre o el hilo que usaremos para colgarlos. Una manera sencilla de hacer los agujeros es calentando la punta de una vara metálica con un encendedor. Hagan los agujeros que necesiten cuidando que no estén en la parte que se llenará de agua.

The next step is to do one or three holes to the container, you can do them before or after the painting, I did them before. We´ll use them to pass the wire or the thread. You can do them heating the point of a metallic staff with a lighter, this will make easier and faster the process. Take care don´t make the holes where will put the water.

Por último, la parte más emocionante. Colgar los bebederos en los lugares donde las aves suelen posarse con más frecuencia para descansar. Yo los ubiqué en la terraza de mi edificio. Ajústenlos bien con el hilo o el alambre, deben quedar fijos porque si se mueven, las aves se asustarán. Los llenan de agua y ¡Listo! Ahora las aves del vecindario tienen un lugar donde refrescarse. Pueden ubicar estos bebederos en sus jardines, ventanas, patios, etc., preferiblemente en lugares altos para que las aves se sientan más seguras de ir. Recuerden estar pendientes de mantenerlos limpios y de cambiar el agua todos los días para que esté siempre limpia. Una buena idea es hacerlos en familia, en las comunidades y en las escuelas para promover entre los niños la importancia del reciclaje y del cuidado y amor hacia los animales y la naturaleza.

Last and more exciting part, hang the watering places where birds like to sit (preferably in high places where they feel more secure to go). I puted them in the terrace of my building. You must adjust them well with the wire or the thread because if they move the birds will scare. Fill them with water and ¡Done! Now the birds of your neighbourhood have a place where they can go to refresh themselves. You can put these watering places in your garden, windows, balconies, etc. Remember to keep them clean and to change the water everyday. A good idea is to do them with your family, community and in schools to promote the importance of recycling and the love for animals and nature.

Con estos bebederos no sólo darán agua a las aves sino que llenarán su entorno con los colores, cantos y alegría que ellas nos ofrecen.

These watering places not only will give water to the birds but at the same time will fill your house, school and neighbourhood with the colors, singing and joy that only birds can bring.
