What happened to Earthworm Jim?

In all the years that video games have existed, we've seen multiple characters that have been around for a long time, becoming icons for many companies. For example, we have Mario, who today is a character that just by seeing him reminds you of video games of the past and present.

Just as there were characters that saw the light for an indefinite time within this industry, there are others that for some reason were not known more of them, disappearing completely from video games, this is the case of Earthworm Jim, a charismatic character who had his golden moment in the past.

Earthworm Jim's first video game was released in August 1994 by the company Shiny Entertainment, making its first appearance on a well-known console called Sega Genesis. Almost instantly it would become a high score video game in specialized magazines due to the excellent gameplay and fluid animations which stood out in those years.

It would quickly be released for other platforms, such as the Super Nintendo, Mega-CD, Game Boy and others, becoming one of the most popular characters of the time. Everything in the video game was artistically handcrafted, giving it a look that many considered incredible.

Several magazines that were very famous considered it the video game of the year, something that was very difficult to achieve in those years because the quality of the games was incredible, but Earthworm Jim captured your attention immediately, its funny scenes and a very well-polished gameplay had its rewards.

Due to the success of the first game, a sequel called Earthworm Jim 2 would be released later for multiple platforms, in addition an animated series would be released for TV where we could observe the charismatic character and his enemies of the video game. But not only was this animated series released, it also had its comics and action figures, it became a powerful symbol of the video game world.

Up to this point, Earthworm Jim was something incredible. If everything pointed to a future success for this character, what happened to him? It all started when Interplay bought Earthworm Jim's development company. Their goal was to make a 3D platform game, since they were very famous at the time, examples of which are Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie.

In 1999 was released Earthworm Jim 3D, a game that completely ruined the reputation of the charismatic character, the critics destroyed it completely due to different factors, in addition the users did not look at this video game with good eyes and those who had the opportunity to play it simply changed it for another game.

That same year they released the direct sequel of the video game Earthworm Jim 2 but for the Game Boy Color, this time rescuing a little bit the essence of the old video games, however, it didn't succeed in sales, many people would be disappointed of the Earthworm Jim 3D and didn't give it the opportunity it deserved.

Gamelot was the last developer to license Earthworm Jim, releasing an HD Remake of the first game in the saga as downloadable content for different consoles, including the Xbox 360 or PS3. For the fans of this character it was nice to revive Earthworm Jim in high definition.

In 2018, this video game was mysteriously removed from all official servers, leaving it completely forgotten. It is sad to see how a character that was at the top was left underground, so much so that today many consider him a character from the past, but others still have the illusion that he will revive in the future.
