Simón Bolívar in folk art / Simón Bolívar en el arte popular

On July 24, 1783, Simón Bolívar was born, a leader in the struggle and liberator of entire nations. His figure is an unequivocal identity symbol and is reflected in many ways in the complex social imaginary of Venezuelans, and today, 237 years later, we commemorate him.

I made this selection of works from a book from the year 1993. It is called "65 men for Bolívar, the women's Liberator", and in it you can see the precious works of folk artists from various regions of Venezuela, in a compilation made by Mariano Díaz.

"Popular art" generally refers to those artistic expressions typical of the popular classes, of people who have not had access to the academic field of art, but who have traditionally made creations that due to their beauty and skill in execution could not be considered artisanal.

I think Venezuela is a country very rich in the cultural diversity of its plastic expression, and this is a current of Venezuelan art that I enjoy appreciating, like many others.

Of all the photographs that I share in this book, which contains more than 100 works, I would say that my favorites are “Bolívar en Coro” (1982), for the technique that the artist Oliva Rodríguez used to recreate the colonial streets of Coro, with its classic windows and its cobbled paths, and what I like the most: the undulating colors radiated by that fascinating sun.

And also "Bolívar at the patronal feast" (1992), the party climate is simply adorable, we see a Simon who raises his arms between colorful streamers, and perhaps it is the fierce Palomo, one of his most beloved horses, is that lovely animal adorned with flowers. It is a very special scene, which I identify with this short paragraph from the book:

“One has known about Bolívar in history, but prefers what the people say and do; is more than one. You see it very official in the square, in the portraits, in the monuments, but you need to know it humane and proper. And so you find it in the painting, in the stone, in the embroidery, in the mud and in the wood, which are the heart that the folk artist has to say to the Liberator, that the humble person feels like a stamp of Justice and of hope".

El 24 de julio de 1783, nació Simón Bolívar, referente de lucha y libertador de naciones enteras. Su figura es un símbolo identitario inequívoco y se ve reflejado de muchas formas en el complejo imaginario social de los venezolanos, y hoy, 237 años después, lo conmemoramos.

Hice esta selección de obras de un libro del año 1993. Se llama 65 hombres para Bolívar, el Libertador de las mujeres, y en él se pueden apreciar las preciosísimas obras de artistas populares de varios rincones de Venezuela, en una compilación hecha por Mariano Díaz.

El “arte popular” se refiere generalmente a aquellas expresiones artísticas propias de las clases populares, de personas que no han tenido acceso al campo académico del arte, pero que de manera tradicional han realizado creaciones que por su belleza y destreza en la ejecución no podrían ser consideradas artesanales.

Creo que Venezuela es un país muy rico en la diversidad cultural de su expresión plástica, y esta es una corriente del arte venezolano que disfruto apreciar, como muchas otras más.

De todas las fotografías que comparto de este libro, que contiene más de 100 obras, diría que mis preferidas son “Bolívar en Coro” (1982), por la técnica que utilizó la artista Oliva Rodríguez para recrear en un hermoso tapiz las calles coloniales de Coro, con sus clásicos ventanales y sus caminitos empedrados, y lo que más me gusta: los colores ondulantes que irradia ese fascinante sol.

Y también “Bolívar en la fiesta patronal” (1992), el clima de la fiesta es sencillamente adorable, vemos a un Simón que alza sus brazos entre coloridas serpentinas, y quizá sea el aguerrido Palomo, uno de sus más queridos caballos, es ese encantador animal adornado de flores. Es una escena muy especial, que identifico con este breve párrafo del libro:

“Uno ha sabido del Bolívar de la historia, pero prefiere el que dice y hace el pueblo; es más de uno. Usted lo ve muy oficial en la plaza, en los retratos, en los monumentos, pero necesita saberlo humanado y propio. Y así lo encuentra en la pintura, en la piedra, en el bordado, en el barro y en la madera, que son el corazón que tiene el artista popular para decirle al Libertador, que el humilde lo siente hecho estampita de Justicia y de esperanza”.
