A Uncommon Criminal / Un delincuente poco común

It was in 2016 when I was photographed with El Chapo Guzmán, after months of his escape from the maximum security prison in El Altiplano, thousands of kilometers from where we were. There I am, happy to have the opportunity to be portrayed with one of the most famous criminals of recent years. On the other hand, El Chapo seemed to distrust us, perhaps thinking that we were a distraction to facilitate the work of two FBI women who were following him in the group.

What happened after this shot was on film: a camouflaged soldier with leaves and branches appeared on that same street and El Chapo ran towards a small hill, scaling it before the astonished and amused sight of locals and tourists. The military man, an older man, was not far behind, and mounted an unforgettable hunt that ended in a spectacular skid and capture of the thug.

Don't ask me why, but less than an hour after this procedure I saw El Chapo again, walking calmly next to a priest, a very important person in the Entierro de la Sardina, a popular demonstration that irreverently closes the town's carnivals from Naiguatá, on the Venezuelan central coast.

That day we accompanied a dear friend who had the honor of debuting as "widow of the sardine", after years supporting and accompanying with a photographic record these wonderful cultists, who offered him to be part of the demonstration.

The widows in this tradition are men in sexy, paper-filled mourning dresses, wigs, and exaggerated makeup, who wailing at the top of their lungs in procession, behind a float carrying a large cardboard sardine, frosty decorations, flowers and fruit offerings.

During this procession the crazy widows can throw themselves in the streets simulating a “patatús”. I saw this funny scene and how the priest presented him with a "bible" with erotic photos, which caused the widow to come to her senses and join the procession.

Truly a unique experience where the profane Caribbean shook the more reserved corners of our minds to free ourselves in an unforgettable party.

Fue en el año 2016 cuando me fotografiaron con el Chapo Guzmán, luego de meses de su escape de la prisión de máxima seguridad de El Altiplano, a miles de kilómetros de donde estábamos. Ahí estoy yo, feliz de tener la oportunidad de quedar retratada con uno de los delincuentes más famosos de los últimos años. En cambio el Chapo parecía desconfiar de nosotros, pensando quizá que éramos una distracción para facilitar el trabajo de dos mujeres del FBI que lo seguían en la comparsa.

Lo que pasó luego de esta toma estuvo de película: un militar camuflado con hojas y ramas apareció en esa misma calle y el Chapo salió corriendo hacia un pequeño cerro, escalándolo ante la vista atónita y divertida de locales y turistas. El militar, un hombre mayor, no se quedó atrás, y montó una cacería inolvidable que terminó en un aparatoso derrape y captura del maleante.

No me pregunten por qué, pero a menos de una hora de este procedimiento volví a ver al Chapo, caminando tranquilo al lado de un sacerdote, personaje muy importante en el Entierro de la Sardina, una manifestación popular que cierra con irreverencia los carnavales del pueblo de Naiguatá, en el litoral central venezolano.

Ese día acompañamos a un querido amigo que tenía el honor de estrenarse como “viuda de la sardina”, luego de años apoyando y acompañando con un registro fotográfico de calidad a estos maravillosos cultores, quienes le ofrecieron ser parte de la manifestación.

Las viudas en esta tradición son hombres con sexys vestidos de luto rellenos de papel, pelucas y exagerados maquillajes, que lloriquean a todo pulmón en procesión, detrás de una carroza que lleva una gran sardina de cartón, adornos escarchados, flores y frutas ofrendadas.

Durante esta procesión las alocadas viudas pueden tirarse en las calles simulando un “patatús”. Vi esta graciosa escena y cómo el cura le presentaba una “biblia” con fotos eróticas, que provocó que la viuda volviera en sí y se incorporará a la procesión.

Realmente una experiencia única donde el Caribe profano estremeció los rincones más pacatos de nuestra mente para liberarnos en una fiesta inolvidable.
