Riverine Bangladesh and our civilization
Hello Friends, Hope you all are well and enjoying your time.
If we were to go back a few hundred years from today, it would be seen that our civilization today was not like that then. Today the advancement of technology has increased so much that civilization no longer needs a specific regulator. In earlier times our civilization was mainly centered on the river. One of the reasons for this was the inadequacy of machine run vehicles. River was one of the most popular means of communication for people as it was very easy to travel and bring goods.
Most of the great civilizations you will see in ancient times were built on the banks of rivers. In addition to business and travel facilities, the beauty of the river was one of the reasons for the development of civilization. Yet in this modern age some businesses have established on the banks of the river. Brick kilns and cement mills are those examples.
If you think of Dhaka city, it is also located on the banks of the river Buriganga. The house of the Nawab is also located on the banks of the river Buriganga. I have visited this palace of the Nawab several times. You can enjoy the beauty of the river Buriganga from the wide staircase very easily.
Bangladesh is a riverine country. There are more than 700 rivers in this country. The Padma, Meghna and Jamuna are among the major rivers. Many people depend on these rivers for their livelihood. Fishermen in particular are totally dependent on the river.
Another class of people depend on this river who have no real home of their own. They build their homes and live where the river rises. This is their temporary house.
I took these pictures when I was traveling in the southern part of the country before the Corona pandemic and lockdown. These pictures are taken from the river Padma and its banks. I hope you like it.
Thanks.
Stay safe and healthy.
