[Data visualization] Countries with the largest gold reserves
More than 80% of all the world's national gold reserves are held by central banks and finance ministries in just 25 countries. The United States has the largest gold reserves in the world. US gold reserves are estimated at 8,000 metric tons, more than Germany, Italy and France combined. Most of the US gold is stored at Fort Knox, Kentucky, with the remainder held at the Philadelphia Mint.
Since 2010, after the financial crisis, central banks began to actively buy gold. In times of uncertainty, gold has always been viewed as a safe asset, and especially in times of financial crisis.
