What is the coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that was discovered in the 1960s but whose origin is still unknown. Their different types cause a variety of illnesses, from a cold to severe respiratory syndrome (a severe form of pneumonia).
Many of the coronaviruses are not dangerous and can be treated effectively. In fact, most people get a coronavirus at some point in their lives, usually during their childhood. Although they are more common in the fall or winter, they can be acquired at any time of year.

Hello my dear friends, today I come to show you the elaboration of a mouthpiece, unfortunately it is not a topic that I am very happy to expose but it is necessary that we face the issue and talk a little about the Coronavirus or as it was called recently by the UN as "Covid-19". We have been hearing about this since last year but it is in the last two months that alarms have been raised around the world because of its spread.

Cases have already been reported here in South America, until yesterday there were 3 cases in Colombia and as many in Brazil which are our closest neighbours. All this situation is quite worrying, thank God our country Venezuela still does not report cases and that gives us much peace of mind.

Instructions

Today I want to show you the step by step of this mouth cap; there are many models but I liked this and another pattern that I will be showing you in the next days.

Some time ago there was a television advertisement that said: "It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it" this is very true; we should not be afraid, what we should do is be prepared and of course pray to God and all the saints so that this virus never arrives to our home.

Step 1.

  • In the images I tried to show you the measures we must take to make the pattern first. With the help of pencil and ruler, we measure and draw the lines.

Step 2.

  • In this step we have to make on the straight lines, some semi-curved lines, I hope the images will help you to make this step the best possible. I made these curved lines on my own, but if you are a seamstress you may have the special rule to make armholes. Finally you cut the pattern for those curved lines you made.

Step 3.

  • Cut out two rectangles measuring 18 x 30 cm, fold the rectangle in half and place the pattern on top, cut out leaving one centimetre of seam. Do the same for both rectangles.

Step 4.

  • We faced the right side of the fabric, as we did in the image, and passed the seam to make what will be the front of our mouthpiece.
  • If you like you can make it in different colored or printed fabrics to look better.

Step 5.

When we have step 4 done on both rectangles, we face straight on and pass seam leaving a space to then turn around.

  • Before turning the work over, we must cut the corners and this way the work will be neater.

Step 6.

  • We pass the iron and sew all over the shore. To the sides we will fold half a centimeter inwards, pass the machine and put a garter, the thinnest you can get on the market.

This is the final result of our work today. As I said before "It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it". I have a friend in Italy who tells me that the mouthpieces flew in the pharmacies when the virus spread, but if we have the knowledge we can make them at home, either by hand or by machine, either in new fabric or reusing any shirt or flannel we have out there. I say goodbye, take care, many of you, and here I leave you with the daily preventive measures to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases:

"Prevention begins at home."

Avoid close contact with sick people. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Stay home if you are sick.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and then throw it away. Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched, using a common household spray or wipe.
People who have symptoms of VIDOC-19 should wear masks to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of masks is also essential for health care workers and caregivers in a closed environment (in the home or health care facility).***
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. Always wash your hands with soap and water if they are visibly dirty.
