The West is the Best

in GEMS5 years ago

At least this is what most backpackers, tourists from around the world and of course the people from the west say about Australia.

What they mean by this is the state of Western Australia, which is very different from most other states with its breathtaking beauty. That does not mean that all other states are not beautiful, but Western Australia indeed is very special.

If you´ve read one of my latest posts about a Mountain in a Nationalpark called Cape Le Grand, you already know what I´m talking about. If not, you´ll find it here.

But there in this Nationalpark alone there is more than just a Mountain to climb, this Nationalpark is home to some of the most beautiful beaches I´ve seen in my life. In fact, I only know one in Thailand who can hold a candle to these beaches

The Beaches

The beaches in western australia are well known for its fine sand and crystal blue water. They´re also known for very cold water, so be prepared to get cooled down drastically in summer. But who wants to swim in 30 degree warm water when it´s 35-40 degree outside?

I heard a lot about the beaches north of Perth and that they are the most beautiful in Australia. I, for my part can only tell about beaches south of Perth and especially about the ones in the Cape Le Grand Nationalpark.

No matter if it is the Thistle Cove on the photo above with the nearby Whistling Rock or the Hellfire Bay. They don't differ much in their beauty and the granite rocks around these beaches make it the perfect postcard.

Here you can literally explore the underwater world without any goggles. The water is that clear that you can see all the fishes around you. If you´re lucky enough there are some waves to surf.

But there is one more beach which stands out from all the other beaches for one reason and this is the Lucky Bay

No, it´s not the fact that this beach has the whitest sand in australia, it also isn´t the crystal blue water, it´s the Kangaroo. Lucky Bay is home to Kangaroos that life on and around the beach. Although the best time to see them is during dusk and dawn we were lucky enough to see them during the day.

Some people believe that this is an invitation to pet and feed them, no it´s not. You should never touch or feed any wild animals. Just enjoy seeing them, not everyone has the chance to see something like that.

We´ve not only seen Kangaroos during our visit to this beach. Walking back to the car park we saw this beautiful colored frog sitting on a wooden pole. I´m not 100% sure but I think it is a Spotted-thighed Frog

Outside of the Cape Le Grand Nationalpark directly next to the town of Esperance there is another highlight of this region.

The Pink Lake

Just outside of town there is a lake called Pink Lake, once known as Lake Spencer. It got its name from the pink coloured water. This coloring is caused by certain weather conditions as well as the Dunaliella Salina algae

Unfortunately we were not that lucky and were a bit disappointed. But from photos we know that it can look absolutely fantastic if the conditions are perfect. But this gets very rare since a few years.

A dream of anyone who loves snorkeling

About 600 km west from Esperance is a town called Denmark. Here you will find the Greens Pool situated in the William Bay National Park.

If you ever dreamed of a beach, completely sheltered from the waves of the southern ocean and surrounded by big boulders, than this is your beach.

This beach is made for snorkeling. It also is a good spot for the kids as the beach has a long gradual slope. Enjoy the day on this unique beach with swimming, snorkeling and jumping from the boulders. This is like one of these spots you don´t want to leave anymore. But again, the water here is pretty cold, even in summer.

Being one of the most favorite spots in the area, this beach can get really crowded during the peak times. But apart from that it is totally worth a visit and you should not drive passed it when you´re near.

Well, after writing this post and seeing all my old photos again, I now know that I need to visit these places again one day!
