A lesson about my profession
Just for the way of introduction, my name is zami, an ardent follower of Christ, a Nigerian by birth, a blogger by calling and a pharmacist by profession.
How I manage to navigate between blogging and studying pharmacy is something I still find difficult to explain. Anyways, I enjoy both and will keep juxtaposing the two, as they both occupy a critical part of my life.
Today, in synchronism with my profession, I'll be taking a short lesson on Asthma, its causes, as well as its management. Come with me.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a reversible chronic disease characterised by bronchial hyper responsiveness, airways obstruction and inflammation of the bronchial cavity, leading to difficulty in breathing, wheezing episodes, chest tightness, pain, and irritable cough.
The aetiology of asthma is relatively unknown, but, it has been traced to some factors like allergens, genetics, and environmental factors.
Basically when an asthmatic patient is exposed to allergens from air, some mediators like Prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and eosinophils are released. This mediators then trigger mucus production in the airways as well as inflammatory response. This can lead to the manifestation of symptoms like;
- Chest tightness
- Difficulty breathing
- Wheezing episodes
- Fast breeding
- Difficulty talking etc.
Management
This is the most important part of the lesson, and as a health professional, I'm more interested in this. Asthma can be effectively managed by employing the following therapy.
- Corticosteroids; examples, fluticasone, betamethasone and prednisolone.
- Leukotriene inhibitors; example, montelukast.
- Beta agonist; example, salbuterol
- Biologics; example, mepolizumab
The knowledge of asthma is very important and of great essence. Most persons develop the symptoms without knowing it. The disease gets worst with time, hence, early diagnosis is the key to its effective management.
Technological advances have affected pharmacy practise greatly. In fact, without technology, most disease diagnosis will be difficult to perform. Drug production too, would have been cumbersome and complex to tedious to carry out.
On the whole, technology has affected the pharmacy profession greatly in a positive way.
Conclusion
Just like I advise in my weekly health review, the safety of our health and those around us is of great importance and shouldn't be overemphasized. Most health conditions are somewhat contagious, hence, when people around us have it, we become prone to it. This might not be the case with asthma, but we should always take our health important and seek for help anytime we experience discomfort in our health.
