SEC15 WK1: "Life on Social Media"

Hey Steemian friends!

Ah, the memories of "Friendster"! it was the first social media experience I had and I tell you it was a wonderful memory back then in 2007. I was a teenager and I couldn’t stop chatting with my friends till midnight those days. Since then, social media has evolved and brought both the highs and lows to my life. So, let’s get into this topic “Life on Social Media".

👉 Do you support that our daily lives should be put up on social media all the time?

Personally, I prefer to stay away from social media all the time. You might feel I’m old-fashioned, but I’m a guy who ran hundreds of social media campaigns for companies so I know what I’m doing and how social media can play a part in what we share. However, this topic totally depends on the personality, lifestyle and how much influence you have on your followers.

Usually, there are things in life which are private and I don’t encourage or support anyone to share those on social media all the time. Also, this behaviour of sharing your lifestyle has become a norm for the newer generations. More views and likes have become the goal of life. But remember that some aspects of life are better kept private.

👉 Have you ever experienced or seen any case where a person has the habit of showcasing his life on social media and the effects turned out well?

There are many cases like this in Sri Lanka. Even the negative marketing is oddly effective here. Do anything viral you are popular most of the time and will be on the front page of every story from then on. Hence many people believe social media can be a ticket to fame. Whether it's modeling, dancing, singing, cooking or showcasing travel escapades, many teenagers use social media as their stage to perform.

Surprisingly, it has turned fortunes for many. Talented individuals have caught the eye of big businessmen and got married to them, some found contracts for movies, and teledramas, while some ended up on reality shows. Social media fame is definitely a game changer if you've got the right moves.

👉 Do you think all the showcase on social media are true?

Not at all, everyone is trying to impress others for sure. Barely anyone tries to share reality or real life. It's all a big show, those filtered selfies, exotic vacations with curated stories, nothing seems real but seriously good to see. The consequence? A society leaning towards a more materialistic lifestyle, chasing the highs of online validation rather than savoring the present moment. Knowingly or unknowingly we all do that might be a very common human behavior.

👉 Do you feel safe on steemit with your information? What can you say about steemit

Steemit unlike other centralized social media has a unique culture. Here we do not see an extravagant lifestyle nor depend solely on likes and comments. Here, the emphasis builds on attracting substantial votes. However, in diary games, we can see users share their personal lifestyles yet we don’t see anything going viral. Hence sharing information here is like nobody cares!

Well, Is it safe, though? that's a grey area for me. While the decentralized nature allows for anonymity, there's always the risk of someone using your information to their advantage. But one thing for sure is that Steemit doesn't play the data collecting game like other platforms. No storing preferences, no behavioral pattern tracking, no ads recommendations. From this perspective, Steemit does seem like a safer space to share a slice of your life.
