In a world like ours, rejection is a common human experience. It occurs when a desired outcome or goal is not achieved.
Handling this rejection properly without giving in to the negative factors that comes along is where the important aspect lies.

Rejection

Rejection is the act or an instance of dismissing or refusing a person, an idea, or a proposal. Rejection can be experienced or seen in various areas of life like in personal relationships, job applications, in academic settings, and even social interactions.

Rejection may have impacts such as emotional and psychological impacts which sometimes leads to feelings of disappointment, sadness, inadequacy, or inferiority.
However, looking beyond all the negative factors, it can also be an opportunity for some growth, self-reflection, and of course, it can instill resilience. Understanding and coping with any form of rejection is an important aspect of personal development and maintaining a positive mental well-being as a whole.

My rejection experience and how I handled it

Rejection isn't very new to me as it happens every once in a while in my life. My most recent rejection experience occurred a few weeks ago when submitting topics for project and seminar.
Like the usual process, I submitted five topics I was familiar with and could work with if approved but these topics got rejected within few minutes as my supervisor went through it.

This was sad for me as this meant I had to spend more time in school during the break. Though this was sad, I decided to put in more effort into to finding topics.
I asked my senior comrades who were done about how to go about finding relevant topics, i did some research and later realized that my previous topics were lacking the key ingredients supervisors look at; independent variable, dependent variable, and a concept as well.

With this new knowledge, I drafted out five new topics to cover those three areas and submitted to my supervisor again. This time, he approved of the topic.

Rejection comes in different ways but our attitude towards it is what makes the end result of one different from the other.

Lessons learnt from my rejection experience

Just like every experience in life, rejection comes with lessons to be learnt. Some of the things I observed and learnt include:

  • Rejection provides an opportunity for you to assess and improve upon your skills, approach, or behavior like from my experience above.

  • Rejection teaches us to be persistence and the motivates us to keep pursuing our goals despite obstacles.

  • Empathy: rejection increases your empathy towards others facing similar situations as you now have an idea of what they're going through. This can promote interpersonal relationships.

  • Having this experiences, you get to understand that rejection is a common part of life and not a reflection of your overall worth of abilities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, rejection, though challenging and sad most times, it is an integral part of life that can promote significant personal growth and development.

By handling rejection properly and in a constructive way, people can build resilience, gain valuable insights, develop a stronger sense of self and improve as an individual.
