Once you reach the legal age of responsibility — usually 18 and above — society automatically assumes that you are physically and mentally ready to take on more serious tasks, some of which include exercising your franchise, getting well-paid jobs, and most importantly, getting married – not compulsory though.

But before venturing into any marriage union, it's ideal for you as a couple to be financially independent.

Truth be told, it takes a lot to build a strong marriage union, and costs even more to run it successfully.

📌 Money plays a major role in marriage.

There are usually so many needs to be catered for.

– School fees to be paid.
– Rent to be renewed.
– Foodstuff to be restocked
– And several other bills to be footed.

All these things need money.

So who makes the money
While opinions vary on whether money-making is the sole responsibility of the husband, it is equally important to recognize that the status quo had long taken a sharp turn and breadwinning has now become a collective effort of both partners.

📌 Again, money holds a significant place in marriage
To a larger extent, financial security undoubtedly alleviates stress and provides a sense of security, thus, promoting family happiness. Having enough money to meet your basic needs, pursue shared goals, and indulge in experiences as a couple enhances your overall satisfaction.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to strike a balance and acknowledge that money alone does not guarantee your happiness in marriage. Non-financial factors like emotional connection, communication, and shared values also help foster a fulfilling marriage union.

📌 There are several money-related issues every couple MUST consider. They include:

  • differing financial habits;
  • income disparities;
  • lack of financial transparency;
  • debt;
  • and conflicting cultural expectations.

Some individuals share the popular belief that “Your money is our money, but my money is my money”. Others believe that wives need to submit their earnings to their husbands and vice versa. These issues have created tension in most marriages and relationships.

Now, what's the way forward❓

  • To tackle this, try engaging in discussions about financial expectations, goals, and individual financial autonomy with your partner. Rather than subscribe to rigid gender roles, try discussing and agreeing upon financial roles and responsibilities that align with your values and preferences.

    For me, I believe that every partner should be financially independent and make joint financial decision, but this might not align with your values – which is still valid. So choose what works for you.

  • You could also take proactive measures like encouraging open communication about finances regularly. It helps foster transparency.

  • Also, seek professional help, such as financial counseling, when faced with complex financial issues.

Final Thoughts

  • Among the many facets of married life, money holds a very significant place.
  • Though crucial, it still is not central to a family's happiness as there are other non-financial factors that contribute to this.
  • The better money is handled and managed, the higher it's chance of enhancing your overall satisfaction in marriage.
  • Lastly, choose what works for you. Create your own happiness.

Wow.. what a nice contest.. thanks for the invite dear 👍

Thank you for stopping by. See you in your comment section.

Dear friend, thanks for inviting me. Having read your article, I agree with all the points you have mentioned. Money is very important for marriage and if we look around us, where there are more financial problems, the relationship of husband and wife becomes a scene of daily fights. If the husband's income is not high, then the wife should do compulsory work, so that both of them can easily meet their expenses in this period of inflation. Best wishes to you 🌷🌷

It is advisable everyone works and also learn financial management.

Thank you for your time, best wishes.

I really like write up is so nice

I am most grateful.

Hi, @ruthjoe
Thank you for the review. Those screenshots are excerpts from the post itself. I designed it with Canva myself — just an empty canva with my text on it. I understand the community's zero tolerance for plagiarism and would not commit it consciously.
