If you want to raise a lot of brows on your next visit home then you can try any of these:

1. Introduce a woman 2x your age to your parents as your fiancée. Tell them all the beautiful things she has done for you in the last 2 years. How she single-handedly grew your company into the multimillion-dollar company it is today. Make sure your no-nonsense aunt is right there. Now watch her face boil while you glow at the unexpected chaos you've caused.

2. And ladies, don't think you're exempted from the fun! Imagine dating that adorable little boy who proposed to you years ago when he was only 7. He's a cute 21-year-old now and still can't take his eyes off you. Let the tongues wag and the people talk. After all, what else can they say besides, "Aha, the age gap is too much na"?

Okay, no more vawulence. Let peace prevail. Haha!

As you might have observed, these examples highlight how societal norms regulate dating and marriage, emphasizing the double standards when it comes to age gaps.

But let's face this: age gap means different things for different people. It boils down to a particular society's values, the gender involved and the people's financial status.

What then is age gap?

In this context, it simply refers to the difference in age between two individuals, which often becomes a factor when choosing a partner.

While it may be acceptable for a man to have a younger partner, choosing an older partner is often seen as taboo, particularly by most tribes in Nigeria. Ladies, on the other hand, can be with partners older than them, but heaven forbid their partners are younger!

Can it be a problem in marriages and relationships?

Sure, age gap can be a problem in some relationships. Some may worry about being respected by their partners, while others find it embarrassing due to cultural and moral ethics.

Personally, I consider the age gap when choosing a partner. An age gap of 5-10 years seems perfect but going for a younger guy might present some challenges.

• Most younger guys are still struggling with their egos.
• He might feel intimidated or his family and friends could make him feel that way.
• Plus, managing a relationship can be tricky if the maturity levels and life experiences greatly differ.

The exception...
While we're all for freedom in choosing a partner, any case involving child marriage is simply unacceptable. I strongly do not support such practices and advocate for the well-being and rights of minors.

In conclusion, age gap may present certain challenges. However, it doesn't have to be a problem if love, respect, and understanding thrive between the partners.
