Stop Them From Dying!!!

Waking up to dead fishes in the pond can be quite disheartening, and unsightly to a farmer. That would be a loss and would definitely have cost him a lot. Not only farmers, but even to any other person who had taken up the idea of setting up a fish pond in their yard and rearing the school.
Suffering the loss of dead fishes could happen to anyone (beginner or professional) especially when just starting and anyone could make mistakes. But all that matters is getting the right information and education to start.
A few mentions on tips that could help reduce this loss would be talked about below

  1. ENOUGH SPACE FOR MOVEMENT. Making sure the depth and width of your pond is well enough to allow free movement among the fishes. Even human beings need space. Availability of space in the pond to enable swimming without restraint and bumping would enhance easy digestion of feed.

  2. REGULAR FEEDING. Your school needs food and a hungry one could be not so good. Fish eat fish! Yes, they tend to feed on themselves, especially on their smallest ones when they starve for too long. Little wonder you would sometimes meet remains of fishes in the pond and continual recurrence of this reduces the amount of the fishes.

  3. CLEAN WATER. If your pond is the type which is manually drained, then this part is to be taken seriously. Except if your pond does not naturally flow, changing the water then you should thoroughly take up the responsibility. Drain the water when they turn brown and smelly then pump in clean water. Also try to remove excessive fish feeds on the pond's surface.

  4. COVER POND. Make a cover with net, making sure the mesh size would not allow any external intrusion. Leaving the pond open could make them vulnerable to attack from other reptiles or unwanted presence in the pond.

  5. RIGHT FEED SIZE. Large feed size for fingerlings? Don't think so. When feeding your school, ensure the feed size is right for the stage of your fishes ( fingerlings, juvenile). When fishes larger in size eat feed of the smaller size, they might not get filled, leading to hunger and feeding on themselves. Also when fingerlings eat feeds too large for them, it might get stuck in them, not digesting and killing them.

  6. MEDICATION. Not only when the fishes get ill do you administer drugs to your fishes or into the pond. Get in touch with a veterinary doctor to prescribe drugs when you notice unpleasant conditions in your fish and also to ensure their good growth .

  7. Lastly and miscellaneously, try as much as possible to avoid bringing food near the pond, especially oily and spicy ones. Foods with oil, on getting into the pond, release their oily content over the surface of the pond and reduce the aeration process. Insufficient amount of oxygen in the pond could harm your fishes!
