Introduction

In todays post hosted by @sahmie, we will be talking about the “allure of greed”. Greed is one thing that has caused a lot of harm as a result of been self centered and selfish at the expense of others wellbeing.

We’ll be covering several areas like ***the difference between ambition and greed, the destructive nature of greed, how it has destroyed relationships and a whole lot more…. ***

But before going ahead let me invite @lovelystar, @diary-of-ima and @bossj23 for the contest.

Knowing what Greed is all about, what do you think is the difference between ambition and greed?

Most times when we see over ambitious people and how they want to outdo their colleagues just because they want to be head or win a contract, we might mistake it to be greed because both seem to have a strong desire for something. However, ambition has to do with working tirelessly to achieve set goals or build personal growth without stepping on the toes of people, blackmailing or cheating.

While greed, is a different ball game entirely. Greed is the desire of wanting more and accumulating everything at the expense of others. This category of people are selfish they don’t care who is affected or the relationship they destroy, as long as they get what they want. There needs are insatiable.

Can greed ever be a positive force, or is it always destructive?

Well, looking at the positive side of greed, I will say, in a work environment that’s highly competitive, it will make you work harder because you are trying to get to the top. But the bad side of it is that , someone who is overly ambitious will use any unethical practices and loose sight of the purpose on which he was employed to do because of greed.

How does greed affect relationships and trust among people?

For example you have a friend like “Mr tortoise” who thinks he’s so wise and always want to take everything good for himself, without considering his team mates, it will definitely bring about resentment and people will not want to work with such people again.

Some team members will go as far as scattering the effort of such greedy individuals especially if it leads to one person benefiting unfairly while others lose out.
When greedy persons are so focused on themselves, they never put others into consideration. Such behaviour will never make people work with you or even close friends trust you because they feel you can betray them for your greedy desires.

Do you think greed is a natural human instinct, or is it something that is learned?

As human beings, is only natural for us to work in order to get money, so we can provide the necessary things of life for our survival on earth. But the level of greed among us often goes beyond providing this basic needs. For example some Nigeria politician will do anything even if it means killing just to hold on to power, so that they can amass enough wealth that will last for them to their 10th generations yet unborn because of their greed and not minding what the suffering masses are going through.

The politicians over ambitious followers are also learning what their political godfathers are doing. So, that when is their turn to rule, they will follow the same footsteps. So, greed can also be learned as well.

Have you ever witnessed or experienced the negative effects of greed in your own life?

Mostly at workplace, you will see greed at its peak when it involves sharing money. In fact, just recently, a colleague of mine that didn’t come to work, told me and my second colleague to cover for him and gave us some money. I came a bit late, so I didn’t get the information and the other guy kept quiet.

Three days later the second colleague of mine was on off duty and the other guy finally came to work. We were just discussing, one thing led to another during the conversation, the money issue was brought up, that was how I found out about the money. I immediately called the second colleague of mine about the money, he denied it at first before he finally agreed. I told him to send my money, he didn’t send it.

When he resumed work, I asked him for my money, he started giving me bullshit stories, so i ceased his Bluetooth EarPods. He tried to use force to take it, out of anger I threw it across the next compound filled with bush. That was when the fight broke out and our boss heard of the whole story and punished the 3 of us in that location by deducting 25% of our salary for gross misconduct and fighting.

I was ready for the consequences the fight will bring, I only felt bad for the guy that gave us money to share to cover for him… but my second colleague, the fight between both of us, is something that has been long time coming because this is not the first time he’s eating my money. My happiness was his EarPod that he will never see again.

Conclusion.

Ultimately, finding a balance between ambition and consideration for others is key to fostering healthier, more fulfilling lives and relationships.
