What If There Was No Electricity? by @samuelowusu1

How would life be? Would we all be forced to return to the Stone Age, or worse, the Dark Ages? What would happen to our technologically-driven civilization if light bulbs and power outlets were no longer available? Is this even conceivable in our modern age of immediate satisfaction and fast-paced lifestyles? In this blog, many such problems will be talked.

I will give a brief history of electricity and its impact on society, discuss ways we can compensate for its absence, and reflect on how this could affect the future.

The ability to harness energy from sources other than ourselves is the foundation of modern civilization. Animals were used to transport goods and humans to perform manual labor in ancient times. Thomas Savery invented the steam engine in 1698, and machines powered by coal began doing work that was previously done by animals or humans. The increased efficiency of using coal-fired engines eventually led to an industrial revolution powered by coal power across Western Europe for the majority of the nineteenth century.

After perfecting his light bulb for about five years, Thomas Edison built the Pearl Street Station, a new electric utility in New York City, in 1881. A coal-fired central generating station supplied electricity to 85 customers via 400 light bulbs.

By 1882, Thomas Edison had built more than 160 electrical power stations around the world. The availability of electricity transformed cities into bustling metropolises overnight. Because of the power of steam engines and waterfalls, people were no longer restricted in where they could live or work. People now have access to an infinite amount of energy from any source at any time of day, anywhere on the planet, thanks to electricity.

While the current way we use electricity is quite convenient, it is not without its drawbacks. There were 322 lightning strikes per second worldwide in 2017, with about one out of every three being a cloud to ground strike. This means that every 3 seconds, somewhere in the world, a lightning strike occurs. Aside from natural disasters, there are over one billion people who do not have access to electricity.

If we lost all of our power sources today due to a cataclysmic event or a global virus attack on any type of electronic device, life as we know it would be drastically different. Things would most likely come to a halt if we didn't have electricity to power our homes and businesses.

Transportation would be one of the first things to suffer in this scenario. Society as we know it today would not exist if electricity did not power our cars and airplanes (electric). We've become so reliant on these modes of transportation that only professional drivers could get around without them.

If our current modes of transportation were to cease, more than half of the world's population would be unable to obtain food or supplies from hunters and gatherers in rural areas, nor would they be able to sell their wares in a larger market where more people live. Cities would quickly empty, and only a small number of people who could produce their own food or grow it within walking distance would be able to survive. Many more people would die if famine broke out.

Home electricity will also most likely be affected. The majority of people in today's society have their own light switches and outlets where they can plug in microwaves, toasters, and hairdryers for convenience. However, without a power source, these electrical appliances would be impractical or severely limited in their utility.

Electricity in homes will most likely be affected as well. In today's society, the majority of people have their own light switches and outlets where they can plug in appliances such as microwaves, toasters, and hairdryers for convenience. However, without a power source, these electrical appliances would be impractical or severely limited in their application.

Solar panels only work during the day with the right amount of light intensity, and even then they are not 100% efficient. If they are to be used outside, they will require adequate space.

Another major factor that would be impacted is how we communicate. If our energy sources were depleted, communication methods such as radio and television broadcasts would become obsolete. The radio's era would come to an end. If there was no internet access, the Internet's days would be numbered.

There would be no emails, no social media, no forums, and no online shopping if the internet did not exist. All of this would be lost if electricity became completely unavailable.

In conclusion

These scenarios show that life as we know it would be drastically different without electricity. While today's society may appear to be incapable of surviving without all of the modern-day conveniences, humanity has survived without electricity for hundreds of thousands of years.

Who knows? Perhaps one day we will see a renaissance in support for less technologically dependent ways of life as more people realize that what many take for granted can be provided by means other than electronics.
