Greetings to all Steemians, I hope you all are doing great, today I am sharing my participation in the Steemit Engagement Challenge (SEC)| S12W3, contest "Security Matters".

In your own words, what do you understand by the word security?

---

For me, security is the state of being free from any form of danger or the feeling of being unsafe. It can also be said to be the safety or protection of lives, properties, and assets. This includes keeping our environment, home, and personal belongings safe and away from danger and criminal acts.

Hence, Security is an important aspect of human existence, as it is only when one feels safe that he can operate optimally.

In your country, in what ways has the government been able to keep the citizens safe?.

---

The protection of every citizen is an obligation of the Government of a nation, just the security of the home falls to the hands of our parents.

To this action, the Nigerian government has put in place several agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, and Federal Road Safety Corps for the safety of its citizens, all these agencies work hand in hand to bring about all-round protection to the citizens.

But even with these various agencies as shown in the image above, the nation still experiences insecurity such as cyber theft, kidnapping, violent crime, and inter-communal violence across all regions of the nation, while also having other insecurity issues such as terrorism in the North and militancy in the South.

According to the ranking of the World Global Peace Index scores, in the year 2022, Nigeria was ranked 143rd peaceful nation out of 163 independent nations in the world. This explains how insecurity is spread across the nation.

Personally, what do you do for yourself or your family to be safe in your town or country?

---

Understanding that the work of security is a personal duty as the government agencies can't be at everyone's house at all times. I have embraced a few tenets to keep myself and my family safe. Tenets such as;

• Locking the doors and windows properly when leaving home for work or when it's time to rest for the night.

• I've made it a life habit to avoid moving late at night, as most of the insecurity issues we face take place at night.

• Paying attention to the environment for any uncommon changes and faces around the neighborhood. This way, we get to know strangers in the neighborhood.

Have you experienced or heard of any case of insecurity (robbery or kidnap)? What happened?

---

I've encountered some insecurity in my life, but none have been life-threatening. I was a victim of online theft a few months back, I woke up to seeing debit alerts of a sum of money which I never authorized the transaction. I was crushed because that was all I had in my bank account and I was in a strange land with no relatives around me. I just had to call my band to block my Debit card since I suspected my debit card was compromised, so such a thing doesn't happen again.

In the case of robbery and kidnapping, I was robbed in broad daylight when I was a student at a higher institution. But kidnapping is something I only hear about in the news as no one close to me has ever been a victim.

What do you think is the best way to keep a home secure?

---

I don't think there is any way to deem the best, as even the toughest security systems get broken into, but there are certain things we can do to improve security in our homes to mitigate insecurity. These things include;

• Always lock the home properly before moving out or when you are indoors, and only open it when you've properly identified who's knocking.

• Installation of close-circuit cameras (CCTV) is another way to help with your security at home as this will help keep a record of who's entering and leaving your home.

• Similarly, the installation of protective bars on windows and erecting of fences around the home helps prevent people from easy entry into your home.

• Lastly, security is a personal duty but achieved better within a group, hence be security conscious and involve your neighbors and neighborhood, as they are the ones to keep an eye on your home when you are not around.

CONCLUSION

Security is indeed an important aspect of anyone's life, as it is only when we feel safe, that we can give it all without looking over our shoulders wondering what or when it's going to happen. Be security conscious at all times, look out for any strange objects or behaviors around you, and report them to the appropriate personnel. Be Safe!
