Movie Highlight-#2: "Anikulapo"

Welcome back to movie highlight and am your host. This is the 2nd series of movie highlight.
Movie Highlight is a weekly publication where I highlight interesting, tending movies for communication, fun and interaction. It gives tips of what the movie contains and what to expect in it. You can read more about movie highlight in my intro post Here
I promised you in the first series of movie highlight that I will be highlighting a very interesting movie today right? So today the movie I will highlight in a short while is titled "Anikulapo" that's not English, it's a yoruba word but I will tell you what that means in English. "A person who captured death and put it in pouch" that what Anikulapo means.

The movie Anikulapo is a very interesting drama native of Yoruba tradition but has an English subtitle. Anikulapo is a story that shows love and betrayal.
The movie began with suspense!! Showing us Kunle Remi (Saro) on the floor dead. And he suddenly brought back to life by a spiritual bird. One would not know the reason for the bird waking him up until the movie is seen in full.
According to the movie, it is said that in the Yoruba culture, when someone dies, he or she is not buried in the ground, rather he is taken to a mystical forest were he goes to rest.
A mystical bird from the gods called Akala comes to the dead person to either sends the person to the great beyond or bring the person back to life if it is not yet time for the person to die, this was the case of "Saro" he was brought back to life. The mystical bird has the power of resurrection.
The movie tells of story of Saro in search of a better life, he enters a village called Oyo not knowing where to go from there, he met a woman called Awarun(Sola Sobowale) who helped him with food and accommodation but on the condition that he would work for her at her work place with other workers.
Awarun and Saro began to sleep with each other as it is the character of Awarun to sleep with young men she pleases. As time went on she decided to set up Saro's business of weaving clothes. She didn't only stop there but she also introduced him to the king so that he can make clothes for the royal family.
The king of "Oyo" has 4 wives but his favorite wife was Queen Arolake(Bimbo Ademoye). Other wives had children for the king except Arolake yet the king's love was unchanging, this made other wives hate her and insulted her because she was childless. Why did the king's love for her not fade? Maybe because she was his youngest wife who knows?
As soon as Saro set his eyes on Arolake the youngest queen, he was attracted to her, well the feeling was mutual. They were both attracted to themselves. Will you say that was live at first sight? Do you believe in love at first sight? Don't forget that Arolake was already married to the king. I smell trouble already.
To cut the story short Saro and Arolake was caught almost trying to run away from the village together. So the king decreed that Saro be put to death for sleeping with his queen.
Well, Saro died and was thrown into the mystical forest, that was were the spiritual bird came to wake him up.
Arolake collected the mystical power of resurrection from the bird, how? When you see this movie you will find out. She gave the power to Saro who is now her new husband.
With the power given to Saro by Arolake, he became famous and proud and rude to even Arolake. He betrayed his wife.
Guess what? Arolake paid Saro with the same coin he used in dealing with her. Go and watch this movie and find out all you need to know.
Saro's pride was his downfall when the king's son of the new land he went to died.
This movie portrays the end point of whatsoever a man sows he will reap. When you love, you get back love. When you betray, definitely you will get betrayal. Think of what you want in life and start living it as your life, am so sure you will get it back.
The sound track and picture quality is so clear and cool. The music played were traditional Yoruba music that depicts the culture of the yoruba's.
The makeup and costume in this movie is topnotch. It fits every character in the movie.
I also find this movie interesting because of the suspense in it and the message it passes across to viewers.
One thing I learnt about this movie is never bite the finger that feeds you. Experience and even years has taught me that it is always dangerous to bite the finger that feeds you.
Next, I learnt that pride will always go before a fall. The result of pride is fall no matter how long you stay up proud, you must come down.
Arolake gave the power of resurrection she collected from the bird to her husband instead of keeping it for herself. This points the role of a submissive wife. She knew that her husband rising will be her rise, unlike what we have today. She put her husband first rather than take the first place. Wow! That's a great lesson.
Anikulapo is a sure movie to see. It's a very recent movie and I bet you the actors were carefully selected to play their specific roles.
