Am glad to be participating in this first contest of this community...Ngoenyi's contest- 5 things you like about your city of residence. There are so many beautiful things about my city of residence, Owerri, Imo State. Please sit back and enjoy my ride round my city...

I reside in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State. Owerri is a great City located in Imo State,. The Eastern part of Nigeria. It's an Igbo speaking State. Imo State was one of the States created in 1979 be our then head of state...with 27 LGAs.
The state is one of the 5 eastern states in Nigeria and there are so many great things about it's capital city, Owerri but for the sake of this contest, u will tell you only 5...

EDUCATION

We know how important education is to humans. This is one aspect of human development that if denied anyone, you have dealt ruthlessly with that individual. Education is said to be the power of even the poor. Take it away, then, you have taken everything from any man.

I chose education as my 1st point because I know how important it is to us in general. IT IS OUR EVERYTHING APART FROM GOD.

The former government of this State created so many schools even for the intelligent poor. There are some schools here that are called the MODEL SCHOOLS. They are controlled by a section of the government but on free education. All you need do is get up to 50% in the common entrance examination for secondary school then, you can get a form for model Schools. Once you do well, you get a chance to study through out your secondary school for free.... just try buying your text books and order stationeries you need. Not that there are no other government owned and private schools...there are very many of them

The government made it easy for the poor who are intelligent but cannot afford school fees. No one can deny you an admission once you makeup to their cutoff.
ISN'T THAT WONDERFUL?

BUSINESS

As we all know, igbo people are business oriented and they engage in any business that they are sure will fetch them money and they succeeds as God may have it. Men and female in my state of residence engage more in business... buying and selling, majority are eunterprenuers while others are into government/private firm workers.

Once it's 6am here, the market is already full because people of this city are industrious...women inclusive. That's why there are many markets here even in the rural areas...we also have early morning markets here where you get things cheaper and better than normal time....my specialty.
I like early morning markets because, there, you get to buy 1st hand from those that came from villages before it enters the hands of retailers. There are Special market for anything you wish to buy.... clothes, shoes, food stuff, kitchen wares, electronics, etc.

CULTURE

The people of this city love their culture so much. Ranging from;
FOOD
*ofe añara...

IMG_20220221_174723_8.jpg

  • Ofe okazi (ofe owere)...

IMG_20220222_165519_2.jpg

  • Ofe ugba...

  • Ugba and okporoko...

IMG_20220222_130844_3.jpg

  • Anu ogwugwo...

IMG_20220222_130854_7.jpg

Etc.
There is no traditional marriage that at least one or two of these foods won't be prepared.

They have their traditional dance called "egwu ukwu". This is is a dance where the body and buttocks are shaked in a very vigorous way while music is playing. It's a very wonderful dance to behold.
There is also a particular music/ song enjoyed by them. It's sung in their dialect.

They also have their diverse cultural festivals according to each community and village.

RECREATION

Owerri is a city of enjoyment ...of which concludes why for every corner you turn, there's either a hotel, restaurant, bar, Recreation center, etc. Here is referred to as "ndi ngwori" - enjoyment people/city.
There's this adage I heard when I came to this city newly...
make your money outside then come to Owerri and spend it
Money is in serious circulation here because after every hard day's job, 'people gather to take one or two bottles'...men and women!
There are Hotels here and there.

RELIGION

In this city of Owerri, the Religion mostly practice is Christianity apart from maybe visitors that sojourn amongst us who are Muslims...the Hausas. There may still be those who are Atheists because we are not conversant with idol worship here.

There are the Catholics, Anglicans, Pentecostals, and the Orthodox Churches. We all believe in one true God and there peace among us even with our visitors.

To show how important and devoted we are in our worship, the government built a chapel in the government house and it's for all ... non-denominational. We believe in God first in everything we do.

*CONCLUSION

Owerri is a very beautiful city to live in... there's nothing like hectic traffic in the city because traffic lights are at every junction helping in the easy movement of vehicles and pedestals. I don't won't to talk about the beautiful houses you will behold...I can't exhaust the beauty; which is why I invite my friends - @focusnow, @ijelady, @chichieze, @beautybb, and @marajay to relocate to my beautiful City of Owerri.
