All of us want to be healthy. In fact, we were meant to be healthy. However, sometimes, we fall sick. At times like this, we depend on doctors and nurses to come to our aid and be of help to us.

It is disheartening however to say that in Nigeria today, to be more precise, in most public Nigerian hospitals, the hands in which we put our health care in, are failing us. In this post I'll be exposing the terrible attitude of those in charge of healthcare in the University Of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

What UBTH Is Like

Going into the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for the first time yesterday, I realised how valuable life can be. I also realised that despite the fact that life is valuable, it can go away within the twinkle of an eye.

I happened to see an old man on the brink of death, passing through so much pain. He was just shedding tears uncontrollably while his children stood beside him totally helpless and distraught. I also saw another man who rushed his wife to the hospital. He came in such a hurry that he came barefooted in his night gown. The lady I went to visit was lying on her bed, filled with pain, not even knowing what was wrong with her.

I've said so many things, but I've not mentioned anything about doctors or nurses. The question is, as these patients are going to pain, what are the doctors and nurses doing? Where are they?

Attitude of Doctors And Nurses

It is quite sad that health care practitioners these days have little or no regard for human life. They fail to show pity for those who are distraught.

In fact, it is quite sad that most of the doctors don't even know what they are doing. My dad went to the hospital recently and he was given a drug that worsened his condition. It was when another doctor came that we were able to fish out the wrong medication.

The elderly man I mentioned before was in pain. Where were the doctors and nurses?. When his children were crying out for help, what did the doctors and nurses do?. They did absolutely nothing.

As for the man that brought his wife to the hospital, he had to get drugs for his wife but he needed some sort of approval from the NHIS officer that was around. Guess what the man did, he locked his office and sat down in front of it so people will not know that the owner of the office is around.

For the lady I went to visit, she had not eaten anything for close to two days cause she needed a doctor to explain her ultrasound results, for her to know if she'll require surgery. No single doctor came. Nurses around showed no concern whatsoever. She was dying slowly. I don't even want to talk about the poor condition of the hospital ward.

Conclusion

It's quite sad that things have gotten to this level. The truth of the matter is that corruption has eaten too deep into us that now it feels like it is impossible to get rid of.

Those of us that are healthy must value our health. We must try our best to make sure we don't fall sick. The following steps might help.

  • Eat good food
  • Sleep early
  • If you feel sick, rush to the hospital to get tests. Don't wait till the sickness breaks you down cause when that happens, nobody will be there to save you.
  • Exercise regularly.

If we can do all these things, we'll be saving ourselves a lot of trouble, preventing us from falling victim to the poor health care in Nigerian Public hospitals.
