My country and my home, designed with Canva

South Africa!

A small country to be found in the most southern part of the continent of Africa which is known by millions all over the world, sometimes for the good, and other times for the not-so-good.

What so many don’t know is that South Africa shares land borders with six other countries. It is five times bigger than Japan and it is the only country with three capital cities in the world.

Beautiful shoreline of Keubroomstrand

It is home to the “Big Five” animals, the tallest waterfall in the world, the Tugela Waterfall, the world’s oldest crater, more than 3,000 shipwrecks and the smallest mammal in the world, the least dwarf shrew.

South Africa is what I call “home.”

The timeline of my beloved country, South Africa

1486: Bartholomeu Dias a seafarer, discovers the Cape of Good Hope
1652: Jan van Riebeeck establishes the first Dutch settlement at the Cape (Cape Town)
1795: The first British occupation of the Cape
1806: The second British occupation of the Cape
1836: The beginning of the “Groot Trek” (migration) of the Afrikaner “boere” to the interior of South Africa
1867: Daimonds are discovered
1880: The First Anglo-Boer war
1886: The discovery of gold in Kimberley and Witwatersrand (South Africa)
1899: The Second Anglo-Boer War
1910: South Africa becomes a Union under England and adopts the first constitution
1961: South Africa becomes an independent republic, the Republic of South Africa 1986: Scrapping of the first so-called "apartheid laws," such as the passport law.
1992: National referendum (March 17),
1994: First democratic election (April 27) and Nelson Mandela becomes the first black head of state of the Republic of South Africa
1996: The final constitution is signed (December 10)
2019: 25 Years of Freedom celebrations took place
2023: 29 years of a democratic country

Is South Africa a unique country?

YES! For sure!

I've already mentioned some facts in the introduction of this post, but there are so many other things that make South Africa unique.

THE PEOPLE

My mom going back to the golden oldies

The first thing that comes to mind is the PEOPLE.

South Africa is such a diverse country.
No matter your color, race, language, or heritage, you will find it all under the South African skies.

Let me share the start of our constitution with you.

We, the people of South Africa,
Recognise the injustices of our past;
Honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land;
Respect those who have worked to build and develop our country; and
Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.
We therefore, through our freely elected representatives, adopt this Constitution as the supreme law of the Republic so as to – Heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights;
Lay the foundations for a democratic and open society in which government is based on the will of the people and every citizen is equally protected by law;
Improve the quality of life of all citizens and free the potential of each person; and
Build a united and democratic South Africa able to take its rightful place as a sovereign state in the family of nations.

This is what makes the people of South Africa, the “Rainbow Nation,” unique. All over the world, we are also known for being a friendly and welcoming nation.

THE BEAUTY

The second unique quality is the BEAUTY of the country.

Paternoster, West Coast

Beauty which stretches from the East Coast of Kwazulu-Natal’s sugarcane plantations, over majestic mountains, untamed bushveld, flat grasslands, deep rivers, along sandy beaches, green forests, and even a bit of desert skies all the way to the whitewashed homes of fishermen on the West Coast.

The flat grasslands of the Free State

South Africa has been blessed by so much natural beauty.

I have so much more to share that it is difficult to share choose one more unique quality.

THE ADVENTURES

Okay, ADVENTURES.

There is just so much to do in South Africa. With mild temperatures all year round and the sun shining most of the time, South Africa offers a big variety of adventures for the whole family.

Deep sea fishing from our boat, Siyazama

If you are looking deep sea fishing, diving with sharks in Houtbay, a hike up Table Mountain, whale watching from Hermanus all the way to Plettenburg Bay, cave watching in the Cango Caves, bungee jumping from Bloukrans Bridge (the highest bungee jumping in the world),or game drives looking for the Big Five (leopards lions, elephants, rhinoceros, and African buffalo), South Africa offers this on a golden plate.

Would I leave my country to settle in another if an opportunity shows up?

I have just answered this question in all 12 official languages of South Africa with a big “NO!”

I have traveled to many countries in the world, some for business and others for pleasure, yet every time those wheels of the airplane touch down, I sigh in relief at being back HOME.

I know what I have, I know what I get, and I know that I am satisfied. South Africa is where I was born and where my roots are planted deeply.
I also know that the grass is not always greener on the other side. There are problems in all the countries around the globe.

No opportunity will be big enough for me to leave my beloved country, South Africa, especially now that I am getting on with the years.

Hout Bay with parts of Table Mountain

The areas of South Africa where I would love to see improvements

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is one of the world's and South Africa's most famous leaders. Mandela was found guilty of sabotage and treason in the so-called Rivonia trial in June 1964, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Mandela was initially detained on Robben Island, where he had to cut stones in a limestone mine. Mandela was released from prison on February 11 after 27 years of fighting for freedom and became the first black president of a democratic South Africa in 1994.

He started his fight for the rights of humans all around the world. Sadly, our government has failed to improve human rights for its own nation. If I could see improvement on only three of these rights, I would be more than happy.

Free education for all

Health: The right to free and good health care, food, water, and social security

Freedom: The right to freedom of expression, religion, belief, and opinion

Education: The right to free basic education for all, young and old

There is a rising sense of disappointment and annoyance among South Africans that democracy has failed and fallen short of its promises to 62 million South Africans. It is my wish for South Africa that our government will wake up and see the essential for tackling problem issues and start building a more wealthy and just society.

I end my post with a warm greeting from Ballito, South Africa!

So good to see that despite the fact that you have travelled to many countries for business and for pleasure, you still feel that your home country is where you will settle. Home sweet home hahaha.
Well don't know if education and health issues is every where around the world, like people wish to see improvements in those areas. Reading your entry boom 💥 I saw health and education, though you have added free to your article. That can only have a message to all that there is no perfect country.
Some people will not wish to remain in their country for so many reasons but I am glad to see that yours is the reverse.
I wish you a successful entry ma'am

Hello @patjewell
It was an interesting experience reading your post knowing you are a South African.

It is home to the “Big Five” animals, the tallest waterfall in the world, the Tugela Waterfall, the world’s oldest crater, more than 3,000 shipwrecks and the smallest mammal in the world, the least dwarf shrew.

Thiss blew mind as it already showed how unique and beautiful South Africa is.

Using the 12 official languages of South Africa to give a strong No to the question of leaving your country to settle elsewhere is also interesting. You solidly expressed yourself and how dedicated and patriotic you are to your country.

South Africa is a beautiful place and we hope to see improvement soon in the needed areas...

Thanks for sharing and good luck with the challenge...

Simply awesome!!! A lot to learn and it's a great testament to your feelings for your motherland. Once I read about the part of biography of Nelson Mandela "Long Walk to Freedom", which made my respect for him!! You are lucky to be born and raised in such a beautiful nation!! Good Luck!

Awh! Thank you for the visit and the kind words.
I am impressed that you've read "Long Walk to Freedom."
It is amazing that after all those years, he held no grudges. He was our South African father. It saddens me to see how our country has changed since his death.

I am impressed that you've read "Long Walk to Freedom."

Yeah, there's a lot to learn from those charismatic leaders!!

He was our South African father. It saddens me to see how our country has changed since his death.

Well, just like you told me about Cricket the other day!! There are always rough patches. Once Sri Lanka was a great nation in Asia. Lee Kuan Yew once said, he wanted to make Singapore like us!!! Look us now!!! Just we are trapped around bad Politics mam, everywhere... Anyway, let's wait for another cycle soon!

There is no doubt that South Africa is a great country. Problems happen in every country, but home is home. I found your way of saying no very unique and distinguished. Nelson Mandela is an international hero. I have read his autobiography "A long walk to freedom". He was a perfect human being. A person like him is born in centuries. They are the best example of resistance and perseverance. And yes, the people of South Africa have very high morals. I found this out after talking to you. The photographs are fantastic as always. Love from Pakistan.

Hello from South Africa!

Thank you for the visit, the engagement, and the kind words.
Nelson Mandela was an international icon! We all loved him, from the youngest to the oldest, no matter the race or color.
"A Long Walk to Freedom" is an epic book, and I am glad you got the chance to read it.

Keep well! 🎕

My pleasure mam. The book was really a treat to read .

Bendiciones.

It is for me to say thank you for the visit and the kind words. ☕

My kids and now my grandchildren refer to me as "Granny Google."
I love reading, and that is the wonder of reading. You gain so much knowledge that can never be taken away from me.
Even here on Steemit, I will read a post, and if I find something fascinating, I will always go and read more about it.
That's just me.

As for my country, it is awesome!

A very detailed and interesting post that I have read about South Africa country. It's beautiful because it's written with love and affection.

You have beautifully explained about your home. And it's interesting for me that only your country has 3 capitals. Facts you have described about South Africa are pearls for me being a CSS and PMS aspirant.

South Africa has 12 official languages. Beautiful categorization. And you have discussed about timeline history.

You have mentioned that British Occupied. Same is here we are colonized by colonizer. After a century , we got independence.

More power to you lady. Overalls level <<3.
:)

Oh wow! I didn't expect a comment from you on my post.
What a welcoming surprise, not only for the visit but also for the kind words. It is appreciated. 🎕

I suppose, in the end, we all love our countries. There will always be something unique and admired, no matter how bad the situation might be.

Oh wow , That river bank, the peaceful environment, sitting in a boat and enjoying the river. All this attracts me. Your city is very beautiful. I have said this many times before. Whenever I see a beautiful picture of your city, the more my mind gets attracted towards your city. I wish! I might be able to visit there sometime.

Always be happy and stay healthy.

Thank you, friend!
My country is beautiful, with all its corruption and bad economy.
It is still a great holiday destination for many tourists.
It is also not a very expensive holiday.

Hopefully, one day, you will be able to come for a visit.

Thank you for the visit and the engagement.🎕

Awhh. Hope so my dear friend 🤞

❤️❤️

Bartholomew Dias has been song into our ears right from primary school and till now I can still recall the teacher making us say all the great inventors and adventurers.

Your country is a good place reason why you don't want to leave it for any other country coupled with the fact that you speak 12 native language. That's huge and shows you master your country well. Home is always home no matter where you go to, you will always want to come back.

I love the constitution as there have been so much injustice in your country in the past. Thanks for sharing with us

What a nice comment!
You got me smiling when I read about your teacher and the songs she made your sing about the great inventors and adventures. It reminded the song I taught my kids about the planets of the earth.

As for speaking 12 native languages. I am afraid I fail. I can only great and say yes and no. I wish I could have spoken them all.

Thank you for the visit! 🎕
