7 DAYS WRITING SKILLS CHALLENGE//Words and music goes hand in hand

My favourite South African Afropop band is Mango Groove. As a multi-ethnic band formed during the apartheid years it was not easy. The government censored and subdue these bands which resulted in only two of them making a success and a force on the music scene to be reckon with, Mango Groove/ and Juluka.

Mango Groove was formed in 1984 by some varsity student friends and during difficult years. Often they found themselves not able to make flight or accommodation bookings due to the fact of them being a "mixed colour" band.
Throughout time the band mainly consisted of 11 members. The inclusion of a whistle, the “penny whistle” made the band unique. It is said that the whistle only cost a penny hence the suitable name.

Mango Groove is not Mango Groove without their female lead singer Claire Johnston who is a national icon loved by all racial groups from young to old. With her the band produced numerous hit songs and albums over the years and also received various awards. Claire herself sang the National Anthem of South Africa on several occasion on international television broadcasting's like the opening of international rugby and soccer matches.

Nightline, an American television program played one of their songs “We are waiting” during their broadcast of the released of old President Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990. This song was written while waiting in expectation for the big release and has the most beautiful lyrics.

How do we hide
The pain inside
We'll see it through
If we can share it with you
So many years
Too many tears
But dreams will come true
If we can share them with you
Ooh-hoo, we are waiting
Ooh-hoo, we are waiting
Ooh-hoo, we are waiting
Ooh-hoo, we are waiting

My favourite Mango Groove song is “Special Star”.

A few years ago I divided the staff into groups and told each group to make a video on ATTITUDE. For our group there was only one song to be used as part of the video and that was Super Star. This video related to the youth of not only South Africa but Africa who, with the right attitudes, are all super stars.

Come and enjoy this video and music with me.
