My Vacation Destination Location / Mozambique the one!

The beautiful Mozambique is my choice of holiday destination!

“Moz” is the sort for Mozambique and the most common name used by South Africans

You will find Mozambique on the eastern coastline of the continent of Africa. The capital of Mozambique is Maputo.

It has a tropical to sub-tropical weather pattern where you will experience only two season right through the year, the “cool and hot” seasons. If it gets hot it gets extremely hot with a high humidity. You will also find that it is warmer at the coastal areas.

Although Mozambique is poor country it is a country with huge smiles from the locals. Over the years Mozambique experienced natural disasters, disease breakouts, corruption and wars. These were the main contributions to this country being a poor country.

Travelling to Mozambique from South Africa is done mainly by road. The main roads are all tar roads and in excellent conditions. The only frustrating thing is the restriction in the speed you can travel. Most of the areas only allow 60 km per hour for the maximum speed. It take us from Johannesburg to the coastal village of Guinjata 14 – 15 hours and that for a mere 1,000 km. Driving from Johannesburg to Cape Town which is 400 km further takes the same time. And don’t think you won’t get caught speeding even though you are not. Official officers are monitoring the main roads at all times. In some cases you will find a speed trap within 10 km of each other.

When you turn off the main roads you will be travelling on ground and sand roads. It will be required to lower the tyre pressure of your car to 0.08 bar the closer you get to the coast that is if you are travelling east. Travelling inland does not require to change the tyre pressure.

Travelling to Mozambique is mostly trouble free but it is strongly advisable to not to travel in the dark on your own or to travel in a convoy.
Like in so many other countries crime has increased due to unemployment therefor it is best to be vigilant and especially in the bigger cities.

For International tourist it is cheap to visit Mozambique. For us as South Africans it cost the same as for any holiday in our country. Fuel on the other hand is cheaper than in South Africa.

Some interesting facts;

  • The coastline is the 2nd longest in Africa
  • Mozambique was previously a Portuguese colony therefor the official language spoken is Portuguese. In total there are more than 40 spoken languages
  • The currency used in Mozambique is the Mozambican Metical but USD dollars are known and used right through Mozambique even in the smaller villages.
  • You will find all five vowels, “o a i u and e” in the country name Mozambique. The only country in the world who has this
  • Of the 98 airfields in Mozambique only 21 has paved runways
  • You will not find any chain stores or bigger stores in any of the towns or villages. Shopping is done on the pavement, markets and small convenient stores
  • Mozambique is a Malaria invested country so make sure to take your Malaria medication

My 5 reasons why Mozambique is my first choice as holiday destination;

  1. The coastal line of Mozambique stretches over more than 2,500 kilometres therefor it is heaven for fishermen especially for those who are interested in Game Fishing (Those Marlin, Tuna and Sail Fish)
  2. Mozambique is known for its beautiful islands and reefs which is ideal for divers and snorkelling for the whole family
  3. If you are a seafood lover you will feel spoiled as Mozambique has the best seafood cooked my the locals the Portuguese way with lots of garlic and peri-peri
  4. I find the friendly Mozambique still very unspoiled where the Westernizations had limited effect
  5. Of course I choose Mozambique for the best beer! The M2!

See you there!
