Steemit Engagement Challenge S5/W3 - My Diary Game Entry in Steem4Nigeria: 26/10/2022
How I spent Tuesday, October 26, 2022
Background information.
The events that took place on Tuesday, October 26, 2022 were triggered by observations I made on Sunday the 24 of October. I noticed while driving that the car will vibrate each time I stepped on the brakes, I called a friend and asked him to link me to his mechanic.
He gave me his number and said the mechanic's name was Ubong.
I tried driving on Monday and it was unbearable so I called the mechanic.
Tuesday Morning: Weather and Traffic.
Unlike the previous days, Tuesday was a bright day with clement weather. I called the mechanic again and asked for the address of his workshop. He said it was along calaber Itu high way in Uyo.
I arranged and did the days school run and on my way to the mechanic I took this picture showing clear weather and the state of traffic close to where I live.
Traffic on the road was fluid, and I had to plot the best route to the other side of town. The drive was intentionally slow because I did not trust my brakes. On getting to Calabar Itu high way, the next challenge was locating his workshop. He said he will station himself by the road on a lookout for a Mitsubishi. I drove pass his place and had to drive back a couple of times. All the while I was saying in my mind, "if he was a Steemian I would just ask of the what3word code for his location and that would be all". thumbs up to steemit for educating us.
"Are you Ubong the mechanic?" I asked. "yes" he replied and pointing towards some vehicles he said, "and that is my workshop". After confirming that I was in the right place, I gave him the wheels so he could feel it for himself.

We drove down the highway and he made his first prognosis, blaming it on the brake disk. He was so specific that it was those in the front of the car. He was so sure of it in his statement that even i could not get myself to doubt him.
Disassembling and Calibration.
Back at the workshop, he suspended the car and pulled out the front tires which was when we noticed a damaged "linkage", at least that is what he called it. He still believed it was the brake disk but the "linkage" will have to be replaced.
The brake disk was the priority, the mechanic disassembled the braking assembly then we left for the new stadium Road where the disk could be tested and calibrated if found defective.
We could not use the car and the available tricycle offered to take us there and we agreed to pay 400 Naira which is the equivalent of 2.667 Steem if exchanged at the rate of 150 Naira per Steem.
On arriving at our destination, i was awestruck. the place was teaming with people, most of whom were mechanic carrying different engine parts that needed to be worked on Click here to see a panoramic view of the place from the road.

I could identify lead machines of various sizes, other machines I am still having a hard time identifying. They were all grinding various engine parts.
Our brake disk was clamped and spun on one of the lead machines, it wabbled and quaver which confirmed that our brake disk was denatured and will have to be grinded at the cost of 6,000 Naira a pair which equates to 40 Steem.
The whole place was noisy, powered by an equally noisy diesel generator. It was just the type of place I would love to be, not because of the noise, I just love the technical nature of the work done there. So I asked the operator how to get trained on how to operate the lead machine. He said three months would be enough.

Here is a short video showing some of the things around the place. It was too noisy so I had to cut down the noice level using the inShOrt application.
Too busy for Lunch.
Hunger may have called a number of times but the mind was too busy to have noticed. It's way pass midday and our disk just started grinding. I had to call home that the car will not be ready in time to pick the kids from school.
When it was done, we had to go over to Ponyem's Pacy, Abak Road to buy the linkage before going back to Calabar Itu high way for assembly.

Reassembling and Testing.
The old linkage was removed and replaced with the new, it was a perfect fit. He took his time and assembled the brake components along side the brake disk.
You may have noticed how clean he looks for a mechanic, he also does a neat and tidy job as you can see in the picture below
After assembling every thing, we went for a test drive and it was all solved.
At a check point, the police asked of his license, he said it was at the workshop and the police found it hard to believe that he is a mechanic. The policeman must have expected the usual very greasy mechanic.
He got 5000 Naira for the job which is the equivalent of 33.334 Steem and I ended up spending the following:
Particular | Amount in Steem |
---|---|
Transportation | 6 |
Disk Grinding | 40 |
Workmanship | 33.334 |
Total expenses | 79.334 |
Time to go home.
it was time to repeat the long drive across town back home. I drove home exhausted and hungry, contemplating the number of mechanic workshops I had to pass to get to Ubong's workshop but I also felt accomplished because I got the issue fixed. I would recommend him to anyone.
At this point I was very hungry. I pounced on the food and in an instant, devoured it. Attempting to Steem a little but was soon knocked off by sleep...
Conclusion
The day was a success, I had to learn a number of things and most especially, I was able to solve the problem.
