Do It Yourself 👉 Drawing| week 25: Drawing a Flamingo
Drawing a Flamingo.
Known for their distinctive physical characteristics, flamingos are brightly coloured birds with very long neck and legs, they are considered as a symbol of elegance and beauty.
Often identified by their bright pink feathers and the fact that they are often found in large numbers, eating with their legs in the water. Flamingos are often captured standing on one leg with the other leg bent in and held up.
Their food
Flamingos eat planktons, aquatic plants and small crustaceans. They use their specially adapted beak to filter food from surrounding water. Their long necks and legs are used for their advantage.
Their Habitat
There are basically six identified species of flamingos which are:
- Greater Flamingo
- Lesser Flamingo
- Caribbean Flamingo
- Chilean Flamingo
- Andean Flamingo
- Puna Flamingo
Flamingos love warm regions that have warm and shallow lakes or lagoons, and coastal areas around the world, places like Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
The Flamingo and Me
The closest thing to a flamingo I have seen in real life is a cattle egret, locally known as "lege-lege". It also has a long neck with long legs but it's white, I have only seen flamingos on TV and online,
I do love birds and always wish to have a parrot, I have birds in my small poultry. And they make a lot of eggs.
I think the flamingo must have a part to play in keeping a balance in the general ecosystem, but if not, it's beauty alone is something.
This is the sample i will be looking to draw.

What do we need when drawing a flamingo? |
---|
To draw the flamingo, i had to make myself comfortable with all needed materials in place. Below are the items I made use of.
Item | Qty | Description |
---|---|---|
A Guide | 1 | to look and draw |
Galaxy A15 | 1 | Capturing the steps |
Plain Paper | 1 | used as a canvas |
HB/2 Pencil | 1 | for sketching |
An Eraser | 1 | for cleaning errors |
Colour pencils | 1 | for colouring |
The Procedure |
---|
Step 1 [Preparing the Canvas]
I got my drawing paper cut and ready.
I started the drawing with my username on the plain paper, followed by the birds eyes and head.
I tried to make the beak look as real as possible. Heavy and curved.
Step 2
Next was its long, winding neck and arcade back.
Step 3
Now i am drawing the flamingo's long legs
Step 4 [Shading ]
Addind some pencil shading to the Flamingo
Step 5 [Finishing]
