Why do students fail in school? Using Nigeria as an example.
Education or schooling is still highly valued in developing countries such as Nigeria because it empowers and educates you, bringing out the best in you. To succeed and be relevant in this part of the world, you must be educated. Because of the importance of education in Nigeria and the factors that surround it, such as costs and so on. Many people cannot afford education, making it a commodity available only to the wealthy and the middle classes. Though efforts were made to provide free education for the poor in Nigeria, such assistance ends once you complete high school, resulting in a half-baked education.
Consider some of the causes of school failure among children. Using Nigeria as a case study, I discovered some causes that contribute to why some students struggle academically in school.
1. Parental neglect in assisting their children academically after school.
Sometimes a child's failure is primarily due to his or her parents. A child who does not receive assistance with his homework from his parent is more likely to fail. Teachers in schools are not the only ones who contribute to a child's success; parents must also work. Some parents believe that the teacher's sole responsibility is to ensure that their children excel academically; therefore, they will not find time to assist their children or wards with their assignments or homework. This will always have a negative impact on the child's academic performance.
Assist your children with their homework after school at all times. If you are illiterate to assist them, you can always hire lesson teachers to simply help your children academically. Children appreciate it when you take the time to read through their notes, appreciate them, and assist them with their homework and assignments. That's one way to help students succeed in school and avoid failure.
2. A lack of reading materials and textbooks.
A school that lacks a sufficient library to help students learn more will always fall behind academically. Similarly, a student without textbooks or other reading materials will struggle to do well on tests. Textbooks are always used to support instruction. It's one of the instructional tools. Some of our teachers back then occasionally taught us from the textbooks. Teachers almost always dismiss students who didn't have. This demonstrates the value of textbooks in education. The illustrations from the textbooks may be the best way for the younger children to understand what is being taught because the majority of them cannot begin reading and understanding from their notes. Additionally, a good library should be established so that students have access to a wide range of resources for academic support.
3. The child's immaturity and laziness.
Oh my goodness, some students are so lazy that they will not do their assignments or concentrate in class; all they want to do is play and play. They frequently forget why they are in school. Such students will not complete their homework or assignments when they are assigned. A serious student may find it difficult to keep up with less serious students. Even if you don't read all day and don't play, you should be able to strike a balance between the two. Hard play frequently causes students to forget what they have learned in school. This will leave them blank and, of course, have a negative impact on them. More academics, less play.
4. Frequent absences from school
A student who consistently misses classes has a higher chance of failing than those who are always present and punctual in class. Frequent absences from school can be caused by a variety of factors. Sometimes a child is absent from school today because he or she has not paid his or her school fees, because in places like Nigeria, if you have not paid your tuition fees, you will not be allowed to enter the class until you do. Most children who owe money are always sent home to their parents. This will have a negative impact on the child's performance because he will always miss classes and important teacher lessons. A child's absence may also be due to ill health. All of these things must be considered and addressed.
5. The all-round nature of schools.
You can bet that no matter how hard you try to teach some students certain subjects, such as mathematics, they will fail. Every student has a hidden ability that does not always correspond to what is taught in school. Many people regard someone who dislikes math but excels in the arts as an unintelligent student. I wondered if knowing maths guaranteed intelligence at times, but unfortunately, schools overlook our unique abilities and areas of interest. All those teachers want is to solve problems and do things that may not be suitable for others.
Some children's adaptation is hindered by the methods of education used. Some children learn best through visual teaching, while others learn best through audio-visual teaching. All of these issues should be addressed in schools.
Conclusion
These are some of the reasons for school failure. Ignorance is more expensive than education. Remember that the advantages of education cannot be overstated. If you don't have a good education, make sure your children do. They represent the future.
