Greetings to all fellow Steem users,

I am delighted to participate in the Steemit Engagement Challenge-S12W6 organized by the Steem4Nigeria today. This challenge encourages us to disclose our country. We all have our own homes, and despite the numerous challenges, we hold a deep affection for them. There's truly no place where we feel more comfortable. I appreciate the opportunity to share, and I hope you enjoy reading my contribution.

Tell us about your Home (country), a brief history, will be an added advantage

Tunisia is located in North Africa, and is bordered to the north and east by the Mediterranean Sea, to the west by Algeria and to the southeast by Libya. Its capital is the city of Tunisia and its official name is the Republic of Tunisia. Its area is 162,155 km2, and the Sahara Desert extends over 30 percent of its territory while the rest of the area is covered by fertile soil adjacent to the sea.

Tunisia has played important historical roles since the era of the Berbers, Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and it was known as the “Province of Africa” during its Roman rule. Wars took place between Carthage and Rome which is still one of the most important wars of the Old Testament to this day. It was also called “the ruin of Rome,” due to the agricultural products it provided.

Near the city of Tunis, the capital, is the city of Carthage, which was founded by the Phoenicians and became the center of a large empire that ruled the shores of the Maghreb, Sicily, and Spain until its fall following the Punic Wars.

Muslims conquered Tunisia in the seventh century AD and founded the city of Kairouan in the year 50 AH, making it the first Islamic city in North Africa.

Tunisia was subjected to French protection in 1881, and with the declaration of the Tunisian Republic on July 25, 1957, Habib Bourguiba became the country's first president.

Bourguiba led Tunisia for three decades, during which he adopted a secular approach to governance, adopting basic principles such as the liberation of women, the abolition of polygamy, and compulsory free education, but he granted himself broad powers until he became described as a “dictator.” He was removed from his position as president of the country in 1987.

Why do you think your country is unique? Share at least 3 points.

  • Its varied landscapes

Tunisia is the smallest country in the Maghreb. But don't be fooled by its size, there is a pretty incredible diversity of landscapes! From the medinas all blue and white, we pass to the Sahara desert, the great oriental erg, and its golden dunes in the blink of an eye. We marvel at the refreshing oases, salt lakes, green mountains, arid canyons and small wild coves... There is something for everyone!

  • Its sunny coasts

It is thanks to its long beaches and its very pleasant climate that Tunisia has become known! And indeed, many seaside resorts have flourished near Monastir, Hammamet, Djerba... But there remain large stretches of coastline still very preserved such as Cap-Serrat and Sidi Bou Saïd and small coves with clear waters where you can indulge in water sports. snorkelling or diving.

  • Its monuments and archaeological sites

Tunisia is also a country with a very rich history! A history of more than 3000 years which still bears witness to numerous monuments and archaeological sites remarkably preserved and curiously neglected by tourists.

Among the most remarkable sites, we can cite the cities of Carthage and Dougga, listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, but also the mosque and cisterns of Kairouan, the amphitheater and the coliseum of El Jem, the synagogue of Djerba, the Medina of Tunis... Don't miss the ksour either, these famous castles lost in the middle of the Tunisian desert between Tataouine and Matmata. And if you are a Star Wars fan, you will find one of the filming locations for “Star Wars” there!

  • Its gastronomy

Visiting Tunisia also means tasting its gastronomy! Tunisian cuisine is rather very spicy Mediterranean cuisine. It’s the kingdom of peppers, garlic and harissa! If you like spicy food, then you are in for a real treat. Personally, it’s not really my thing but fortunately certain specialties escape the rule and reveal subtle flavors.

Here are some Tunisian dishes to try during your stay: the famous couscous (with vegetables, meat or fish), the brick (a thin sheet of wheat and semolina dough garnished with an egg and tuna), the tagine Tunisian (a kind of omelette with potatoes and meat), makrouds (cakes made from semolina, date paste and honey 😛)…

Would you leave your country to settle in another if an opportunity shows up? Back up your answer with reasons.

I admit that the idea of emigrating came to me when I was young, and who among us did not think, but the question still haunts me: Would my circumstances have been better off if I had done so?

I was listening in the morning to a radio program that asked the same question. Four out of five callers answered yes, while one of them repeated the famous phrase: There is no country like my country, even if the circumstances are harsh, and if I had the choice, I would stay, but there is no choice and there is no fair competition.

What drives young people to think about emigrating, even borrowing money to implement it? Certainly, the repulsive economic conditions, lack of job opportunities, and low income, but they will certainly persist if their conviction of the fairness of the available opportunities and the principle of equal opportunity is firmly established.

The majority of immigrants or those wishing to take this step are not from the uneducated class, but rather the best Tunisian minds and competencies are inhabited by this idea, and they are working to implement it like a dream that was haunted by many young people who we are accustomed to seeing queuing in front of embassies to request a visa or immigration. However, the ambition for better conditions was their motivation, but for today’s immigrants, the search for an opportunity somewhere is the only motivation.

There is a large segment of young people who did not leave Tunisia in search of a livelihood or an opportunity alone, and their reasons are not only financial. Some of them would have preferred an acceptable income if they had found care, justice, appreciation, and most importantly, equal opportunities.

What areas of your home (country) would you love to see an improvement?

The education sector in Tunisia is suffering from a severe crisis following the outbreak of the January 2011 revolution in light of the decline of the educational system especially at the level of curricula and due to the shortage in the number of teachers, in addition to the deterioration of the infrastructure and the repercussions of union demands on the conduct of lessons, which made the country occupy unsustainable positions in the classifications. international sector.

Education reform in Tunisia remained at the heart of the political conflict, and appeared in most of the educational reforms after independence, whether in the bet on unifying education or in asking about the language of education between Arabization and bilingualism, all the way to programs, especially those related to religious education and philosophy, as most of these reforms were called. The names of the ministers who supervised its drafting.

These days, Tunisia announced the launch of the national consultation on reforming the education system, which President Kais Saied called for to explore the views of Tunisians on their proposals to reform the sector and establish a comprehensive vision for it, in preparation for the establishment of the Supreme Council for Education.

The education reform file is one of the priorities of the Tunisian president, and he focused on it a lot during his election campaign in 2019. Saied pledged on more than one occasion that establishing a higher council for education would be one of his priorities if he wins the upcoming elections.

Reading your reading your post was so interesting knowing the fact that your country Tunisia is unique for their gastronomy. I think the garnished potato should be the first thing I will take when I land in Tunisia because your explanation shows how delicious and spicy it will be....

It is also disheartening to know that the improvements your country needed is in the sector of education. Education is needed in every country as it is the foundation for the future generation. I hope the improvement which will show soon...

Thanks for sharing and good luck with the challenge.....
